Urgent Advice needed.......please

I have worked for a Government Service since 1990.
I was originally directly employed (as opposed to being contracted in from the NHS) as a nurse, over a period of 13years I was promoted a number of times and eventually moved to a HQ post. (as a senior nurse grade)
In 2003 I was interviewed for a promotion that meant my changing from a Nursing grade to a Civil service management grade (as the new role did not have a clinical remit) I was still employed by the same Government dept.
In all the recent changes to the service my job no longer exists so I applied for the voluntary redundancy scheme.
I was initially informed that all of my years (due to being directly employed by the department) would count towards my compensation offer.
I am now informed that my years as a nurse will not count and only my employment from 2003 will be considered.
I don't understand why my years as a Nursing Grade directly employed will not count.
Does any one think this worth fighting (P.S the difference in payout is over 50k!!!!!)
Also any ideas on where else I could go for advice gratefully received.

Try your Union?
Do you have written particulars of employment which say your continuous employment began in 1990. When you changed grade in 2003 did you receive new written details indicating the change of date?
Have you read all the details of the VR scheme?0 -
I posted on this recently and I think this sort of thing is going to happen alot. Have a look at this link and the voluntary redundancy pdf. There's a bit about what counts as service.
