It isn't really a question of how far, but how long the commute takes. You can have a 20 mile commute that takes 90 minutes because the traffic is always awful, or you can have a 60 mile commute that takes an hour because it's motorway all the way.

My commute is over 30 miles each way, and takes me about an hour. I'd consider going further, but only if it added little or nothing to the time my commute takes.
  • Hi,
I drive between 160 -200 round trip each day for work. I'm in my 7th year of doing it and am finding it harder each year. Have to work out if it's worth it financially viable as fuel, insurance etc all increases each year. Also, it means a new car every 4-5 years so that cost has to be taken into consideration and divided over that period.

Too long on the road effectively reduces your hourly rate.

At the moment I drive 11 miles each way and it takes me 15 mins door-to-door. 2/3 of my journey is on dual carriageway.

Just asking about how much you all drive. Have I been spoilt by only having a short journey up til now?

In all my working life, I've only ever had two years worth of work that was that close. Typically I've done 300 miles a week (30 miles each way).
  • I currently take 3 minutes to get to work on my bike, 7 if I walk. Used to commute Christchurch to Basingstoke, 110 mile round trip, but often shared with 2 or 3 others. Once managed the trip in 50 minutes when leaving really early, but an average was around 1 hour 10 minutes.
  • I have done long commuted before (50 miles each way, every day) taking 1hr+. I think how much you can 'handle' in terms of commute depends on the flexibility of the job to come/go according to traffic and your home life - if you come in after an hours drive do you then have to start cooking, putting the washing on etc.

I have recently gone down to a 3 mile commute and I love it. Never knew how much I hated commuting until I stopped doing it.
MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j

For the right money I'd make a 200mile round trip.
  • Currently do 7 miles each way to work, however have been given the choice of move to another depot, or get made redundant. 40 miles each way, plus £29 a week in tolls just to cross the Humber bridge.
That and the fuel needed means being out of pocket by £4300 a year .......and no its not practical for a pay rise to cover this ....... so redundancy it is .......

It all depends on whether you can afford the commute (timewise and monetary),plus how to get to work if the car ever breaks down etc
