Where do i stand? B&Q kitchen problem

Hi everyone,
Back in November i had the guy out from B&Q to design a new kitchen for me.....all went ok so i ordered it.
The kitchen came about 2 weeks ago and i started to fit it myself.
I had fiited 95% of the kitchen perfectly, but left the drawer fronts off till last, so the gas fitter could get in and install the gas hob above the drawers.
When i went to put the drawer fronts on, i found that they didnt fit, i rang B&Q up and after a discussion they said that i cant get that size drawer for my kitchen and that it was a system fault and they shouldnt of been ordered. They admit that it is their fault and not mine.
Now, obviously they want to remedy the situation for as little cost to them as possible, but what they are offering to do is not to my liking. I've worked out a way round the problem that would suit me and for as little cost as possible (cost about £900 to sort it)

Am i entitled to reject their solution and insist on what i have come up with? and can i insist that they install it? coz i have already paid people to fit the benches, hob and sink and i dont want to pay them again for something that is not my fault.

(sorry for the long post)

You don't actually say what your solution is or what they are suggesting they do instead, so it's impossible to hazard a guess as to what's reasonable.
  • A picture would help, as you have not said exactly how the drawer fronts do not fit. What is their solution? And what is yours?

£900 does sound like a lot.

As someone who has worked both designing B&Q kitchens and installing kitchens (b&q and others) I have to say your post makes no sense to me at all.

You left the drawer fronts off to allow access to the hob? That in itself makes no sense, you still wouldn't be able to access the hob if you had installed the drawer cabinet and the drawers but left their fronts off. In fact if you have fitted everything but the drawer fronts then quite clearly the drawers DO fit because you have fitted both their cabinet and the drawers.

Are you saying that you have actually NOT fitted the drawers at all and have left a unit completely empty? Or worse still you haven't installed the unit at all and have left a gap?

While B&Q are at fault for ordering the wrong items I believe you have to take a degree of responsibility for going ahead and attempting to install a kitchen without bothering to check that the items even fit. I suspect you have a 700 wide gap and that they have sent a 800 wide drawer kit (over 600 wide because you have fitted a hob above it). Surely when you checked the items as you picked them up/had them delivered you noticed that the drawer kit/front was much wider than the cupboard that it came with? I wouldn't dream of starting to fit a kitchen if that happened to me.

Your post really doesn't give enough information as to what the problem is. Are the drawers too big? Too small? Is the unit that you have fitted a drawer unit or not? Have you actually fitted the drawers only to find the fronts don't fit on?

And it doesnt give any information at all as to what the intended solution is. Are they suggesting a smaller unit fitting (600 instead of 700?) and a filler piece fitting in the 100mm gap? I can't see how any reasonable solution could possibly cost £900 and i'd love to know what you are proposing.

Tbh - I fitted a small kitchen and the number of boxes filled a room. I did check everything was there as ordered before starting, but then I only compared to what was ordered. I can see that in a bigger kitchen that might be two or three times the size it would be easy to miss a detail. I'm intrigued as to what the actual problem is and how £900 is the cheapest option for fixing it. My own kitchen cost £2500 with appliances included...

I'm also guessing that its to do with fitting wider drawers, and that the shops solution is to plug a smaller unit into the space with a filler, whilst the OP wants a complete kitchen reshuffle with changes to the worktops and gas location.
