Sold a car on Ebay and now need some advice

Good Morning

I sold my car yesterday on ebay and I have a problem with the winner who wants me to post the car to him!. In the postage section it says: Read Item Description or Ask seller for details and I wrote on the decription Cash on collection only based in (town, county). He emailed to ask for the invoice including the delivery as he was about to make payment (how I dont know as I only had it as cash on collection - no other method at all) and provided his address which is is about 3 hours away by car. I emailed him back advising that the car was collection as stated in the listing but sent him the invoice for the amount of his winning bid along with days over the next week I am available and my mobile number if he wishes to discuss, but have had no reply.

I know its only the next morning but he was so quick to send a message for the invoice that I get a sneaky suspicion he has no intention of buying.

Now I know I should have been more sensible but he also has no feedback and joined on the 71th feb (I believe we all have to start somewhere, however lesson learnt on that score) so he can just disappear and it wont effect him.

What can I do about this anything yet or do I have to wait the 7 days, what if he does not contact me at all? As it was cash on collection there will be no record within ebay that he has not paid except if I choose the payment recieved button.

What a mess!

Any advise is much appreciated

Just wait 4 days and then open a full NPB on him.

  • You never know, they might come and get it - but I doubt it!

You could get in touch with the next highest bidder to say that you're not sure the winner wants the car after all, and would they like you to get in touch in a few days if the sale doesn't go ahead... or just wait + relist.

Just be careful because sometimes they sand a 'cheque' that covers cost + shipping costs and does clear initially, but will bounce later on as it is stolen. Well known scam.

As seller is quite sensible and is inisting on cash on collection only she is safe from the fraudulent cheque scam.

    Thanks all

I will wait for the 4 days then to be honest if he just says he doesn't want it and we do a mutual cancellation I would be happy than having to wait the 4 days and then relist or second chance offer it but I get the feeling he is just going to string me along for as long as possible.

I would ask him about this but dont want to seem pushy.

Thanks for the heads up on the cheque but as soolin says I will not be accepting any other payments except that of cash on collection and if he does send a cheque I will not be trying to cash it in anyway the listing clearly states cash on collection.

I have never had an issue before when selling but I forget others are not as honest as I. lol

He might be a scammer, or he might just be a 17 year old noob to cars and ebay.

Hence the reason why I didn't write what a lot of people seem to do these days and says "those will less that 10 feedback please contact me...." I believe we all need to start somewhere but if he was unsure then he should have contacted me to ask if delivery was available, he can obviously read and ebay states regarding delivery read description or contact seller.

I will give him the 4 days but based on what I have seen and the way he has worded his note in the invoice request I believe I am being stringed along. I will of course take it all back if I am proved wrong.

  • I am taking it all back, have had phone conversations and eBay messages. He has collected it :-) and paid the cash on collection. I have not had any feedback left as yet but so far so good.

As I said Iwould I take it all back.

Another lesson learnt: some people are just newbies on eBay and are not out to scam!
