Nearly new car help please

Hi my wife is looking at part exchanging her near 5 year old Hyundai Getz (43,500 miles). She drives every day on the motorway and feels the car is a but light and being under 1 litre struggles with acceleration. She is looking for a reliable car with bigger boot (the
Pram only fits in the Getz with part if the back seat down!) with a reasonably low cost to run. She will not go older than an '09 plate & seems to have a phobia about cars with a mileage over 10/15k!!!

Her options are:-

10plate Hyundai i30 petrol 12,000 miles balance of 5 year warranty
Cost to exchange £5,350

10plate peugot 106 diesel 16,000 miles balance of 3 year warranty
Cost to exchange £6,500 (£30 annual road tax)

09 plate skoda fabia s 1.2 petrol delivery mileage balance of 3 year warranty
Cost to exchange £5,450

59 Citroën c3 petrol delivery mileage balance of warranty
Cost to exchange £5,500

60 grand punto petrol delivery mileage balance of 3 year warranty
Cost to exchange £5,450

59 vauuxhall meriva 3452 miles petrol balance of 3yr warranty
Cost tO exchange £5,200

Any advice on the above. Looking for reasonable running costs for wife & baby. Car does c45 miles a day 20 of which will be motorway

Any help greatly appreciated as I know nothing about cars

Many thanks in advance

  • Sorry the child as a 2 year old toddler and the buggy a fold up mclaren
  • All the cars in the list would do the job.

I can understand your wife saying the Getz is a bit small for motorway use, so that rules out the Peugeot 106, and to a lesser extent the Meriva and C3.

Hard to choose from the others, the i30 and the Punto might be slightly better on the motorway than the Fabia.

Presumably you've had good service from the Getz, and the i30 has a longer warranty, so why not stick with Hyundai?

Phobia of mileage over 10/15k eh?

She's putting herself slap bang in ex-daily hire territory buying a nearly new car with 10-15k on the clock.

Kia Cee'd is very similar to the Hyundai i30 (they share a platform IIRC) - might be better offers on those....

What's the part-ex price for the Getz? Some cars are available favourably priced brand new at the moment (Skoda for one are doing 'VAT free'). How do you intend to pay the balance? (few deposit contribution offers for PCP too)
  • Many thanks for your help.
    Part exchange value between 2,000 & 2,500.
We do not need finance so that means they say they have less room for negotiation.

If necessary, trick her, and get her to test drive something like a Ford Focus/Fiesta. Even a 10 year old one will be more comfortable, handle better and give a more rewarding driving experience than your list. Cars in general are much more reliable than they were 15-20 years ago and I'm surprised that people are still swayed by younger/lower mileage than just plain frankly, better and more cost effective cars.
    Go on, surprise her!
