Address Change Help

Options
Dear MoneySavers,

I have a bit of a dilemma that is small, yet bothersome. One of the disadvantages of being a mature student who has relocated is that I don't have a permanent address as such -- I've moved lock, stock and barrel. Thus far, my accommodation is on a school year basis. From a perspective of registering to vote, having a traceable address history, credit record, this will not look good after three years.

Fortunately, in my current town, I have a close relative I'm on extremely good terms with (and who isn't far from my place of study) who is happy for me to use his address as my permanent one. However, I'm undecided as to which things (bank details, driving licence, GP, etc) to give my permanent address and which to give my current address to.

Any advice? It's such a small thing but it's resulted in my sitting on a pile of items I'm not yet able to process and sort. :(
LBM: June 2023. Amount owed: ~£10,000I've gone debt free before, I can do it again!

  • I'm sorry if I've missed something but I don't really understand why you can't just change your address every year, which is what I did when I was in your situation.

Lots of people have to move regularly if they're in privately rented property, so I can't see why it's any different for you.

    Is there something I've missed?

Why not use the Royal Mail free service called Mail Collect - details here

You can collect your mail from your local delivery office when it suits you. You will need to provide ID proof, eg bank statement/utility bill etc.

Or if you decide to use just the address of your close relative set up a Royal Mail redirection from your other address(es) so that all mail gets forwarded to your close relatives home. Details here

dont really see where the issue is
  • i changed my address on a yearly basis...it wasn't a problem, more of a pain keep having to fill in different forms!

the only address i didn't change was my drs surgery as it would have meant having 5 different surgeries throughout my time at uni as opposed to using the one on campus...
