What the hell's going on @ New Look?

so i head to get sum new jeans or trews with a giftcard.

Now, everywhere i go I fit into a 8/10 on the bottom, but New Look claims i'm a SIZE 16?????????????

OK fair to say you'll slightly vary per shop but up to 4 sizes????

They were jeggings and skinny jeans, so im fully aware your most likely go up a size compared to straight/boot/baggy cuts.

Seriously... WHO do they use as models?! On the hanger they look like a 10!!! Not even TopShop is that bad!

could it be that you picked up a pair that had been sized wrong?

    never had this problem there

must be a pair that's sized wrong, I usually have the opposite problem at New Look

I'm a top shop size 12 but in New Look I am an 8 and occaisionally on the top half even a size 6!!!! (I'm slim but not THAT slim)

Most big chain stores have their own dress forms (dummys) made to their own measurements for fittings, when I was doing my BA in Fashion we used Stockman forms which are about £500 each and are used by most high end designers. And a Stockman size 12 dress form has a 26" waist. Go to any high street store and measure a size 12 waist ....you will probably find it's between 28 & 31 ",

It's vanity sizing. Try on a 1950's size 14....I can't even get close to buttoning it up yet I'm a New Look 6???

Don't look at the size on the label. Just try it on and buy what fits.

  • I agree with the op there is definitely something wrong with the sizes. I used to love their hula range jeans that were £10 in fact I have still got a couple of pairs but they are looking really old and tatty now I have had them a few years. Now a few weeks ago I went to try the hula range again in my usual size and they didn't fit, the fit was rather odd actually, and the material didn't seem as nice. The old ones were absolutely perfect fit and better quality.

Yes! I've got Hula jeans in a 14 which I love. I've been trying to get some new jeans, but can't get their size 16s on. The black jeans seem to be the worst! I got some nice ones in Next instead, but they 'grew' so much and lost their shape within an hour of putting them on.
  • Shops do vary in their sizing and there will be some difference as well according to the style of garment.

Maybe New Look isn't doing "vanity sizing"?? Maybe they are marking the actual sizes on clothes still? The large majority of clothes shops are now putting labels on clothes stating that they are a size (or two) smaller than they are deliberately.

So - a size 14 person has to look for clothes with labels on stating "Size 12" or maybe even "size 10".

A size 16 person can tell herself she is size 14 (or maybe even size 12) because that is what the labels on the clothes say.

Now we come to the crux of the matter and that is:
    - A size 20 person can tell herself that she is size 18 or maybe even size 16 (because that is what the label on her clothes says)

    and so on.

The shops are, in the main, now deliberately stating that clothes are a smaller size than they actually are. That is because many customers want to think they are a smaller size than they actually are.

The way to tell what size a person really is is to try on clothes that were made before "vanity sizing" started. I think it will be necessary for people to try on clothes that are 10 years or more old and those clothes should be marked with an accurate size.

One way I realised that I needed a diet before now was when I went to try on some vintage (but not that vintage) clothing from a well-known High Street shop. I knew the size label meant it should be too big for me really. It was in fact too small for me. If that had been a recently-made item of clothing that size label would indeed have meant that it was too big for me.
  • i bought jeans from new look the other day but they were age 14, so is it possible you picked up age 16 jeans and therefore they would be about an 8/10 adult size. The kids jeans were mixed in with the adults but these fitted me so i bought them x

I have 2 pairs of identical New Look Black Skinny Jeans, one a 12, one a 14. They were bought individually and tried on instore when purchased. The 14's I cant fasten to save my life yet the 12's fit me perfectly. I'm a 16 up top and their T Shirts can vary too with me needing anything from a 14 to an 18.

New Look are indeed culprits of vanity sizing. I bought size 12 jeans from New Look a few years back (my usual size) and they were pretty baggy. Another pair I bought recently was a size 10 and they were a bit tight. I've since given up on online shopping, you really have to take a few likely sizes into the changing room and try them on.

I bought a hoodie from David and Goliath the other day- I knew they were supposed to be a snug fit but I felt I was suffocating in the size M (supposedly a size 10!) I had to get a large and even that was a bit close fitting.

    It's so frustrating!

HAHA id love to wish it was from the kids range but it was from the Tall section, so cant try that 1!

I did think it was a wrongly tagged issue, like why i stopped shopping @ DP, but up against the rest on the rail it looked the same as the other 16's.
  • OH EMM GEE.

i cant fit into their sizes either. I thought it was just me but no, everyone else must have fat hips and thighs too.

    phew.

    thanks girls
