In the city itself, one of the best places to eat/drink we found was called Pivovarsky Dum. It's in the city centre and more of a cafe than a beerhalle, but makes it's own beer, serves it by the giraffe and the food was pretty good too. The best actual beer we found was a small cafe/brewery at the top of the hill, right next to the castle. Can't remember the name of it, but it was only a short walk from the palace entrance, near the Strahov Monastery Library.
If you have 5 days, it's worth getting out of the city at least once. Take a train to Kutna Hora - takes about 45mins I seem to remember. Within walking distance of the train station is the Sedlec Ossuary. http://www.sedlecossuary.com/ There is an incredible church/chapel there made of human bones. It's huge and entirely decorated with thousands of human skulls, bones etc. Kunta Hora itself is also a nice place to spend a day. It's a small town with an old monastery and some nice street cafes etc. Getting the train is an experience in itself. When we went, it was a 100% stereotypical communist train journey - exactly like the movies. Old train, but dead on time, individual compartments and a female ticket collector with whom, you just knew you shouldn't mess.
If you have time, Konopiste & Karlstejn castles are worth a visit. Both are spectacular and built and furnished by complete maniacs from the bohemian era. There were loads of companies in and around the city centre offering day trips to tourists.0 -
Ate at a few nice places when we went to Prague year before last, we ate once in the main square, at the time we thought it was ok but later realised we'd been quite ripped off in comparison to some of the back streets. If you hunt around a little and take your time to have a wander in the day time, you can find budvar at about 60cents a bottle down the back streets also.
Have a nice break, it's a beautiful city. Plenty of picture opp's!

If you have time and enjoy a bit of history, have a look at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church.

You can still see all the bullet holes etc. where the Germans fired at the guys who killed Heydrich.
Well worth a visit.

beer halls all the way!
uber uber cheap stodgy food there when we went (non-veggie though!)0 -
Thanks guys!
Any suggestions about food? - We have one veggie and one very very keen meat eater!
Get them to swap each others Veg for Meat, if that fails, get the very keen meat eater to eat the veggie.
Only joking, have a great time, I've been 3 times and going again in a few week for 4 nights. Like someone said earlier have a look on trip-advisor.0 -
There is no point in buying a 3 day metro pass - it costs 330kr, and a 1 day pass is 100kr! Buy 3x 1 day passes and validate them when you first use them. They are valid for 24 hours, so if you arrive and start at 1pm, it is valid until 1pm the next day (including night busses and trams).
The area around Andel metro is good for local bars and restaurants, and the Staropramen brewery and beer hall!
The vegetarian amongst you will struggle - expect to eat plenty of fried cheese...
