You have a lot more comeback if you buy from a dealer. The vehicle has to be fit for purpose. But you have to remember that the condition is reflected in the age. If a dealer puts 'sold as seen' it means nothing if the car turns out to be a death trap.
The worst people to buy cars from are traders posing as private sellers.
I would think if you found serious faults within the first month of ownership you would be well within your rights to take it back and at least allow them to put it right. If a dealer refuses, ring Trading Standards or Consumer Direct (or whatever they call themselves now).

Consumer Direct will just refer you to their template letters to write, and advise going through small claims. It's a right pain, cos even if you do win, there's no guarantee you'll get your money back.0
