Step a/c Closed automatically without a reason!!!

i opened a step account with Natwest in the month of january online. they sent me paying in books etc. after I signed the form they sent me.

Anyway I assigned that account to my paypal account and sent £300 to the account via paypal.

I went into natwest to enrol onto Internet banking. they told me that they had closed my account down a few days ago. 'due to a business decision' no more info was available.

I rang the call centre and they couldnt even locate my account!!

why could this be!? !

    AVU strikes again?

RBS Group have a team called the Application Verification Unit.

Once an account has gone through credit scoring and basic ID checks, it is opened.

The AVU then perform additional checks as and when to ensure you are employed where you say you are, check to see that the details provided on your application tie in with any previous applications you've made for an RBS Group account, check whether National Hunter have flagged up any details as suspect, also check to see whether things like your time at address you claimed on your application form tie in with the electoral role data.

They also have a manual look at your credit file just in case they spot something that "slipped the net" of their automated credit scoring.

Think of the AVU as the application-auditors. You aren't alone. Normally the AVU are quicker off the bat than this but in your case it seems they took a while, perhaps due to a backlog, or perhaps because whatever caused them to close the account in your case was a very subtle and hard to find thing?

I applied for a Step account last January and was approved, account was opened, and then closed by AVU. Same goes for my OH and a Current Plus account. The AVU say this was due to minor discrepancies between details provided on the application and other applications we had made for RBS Group products in years past.

Sorry to hear this has happened. Not much that can be done now :(

Thank you soo soo much for the information :)

It's been closed for a week now according to the branch.

I'm assuming they'll send me a letter informing me of their decision and the reasons for it?

The AVU will write to you but won't tell you why they closed the account.

You can call and ask but they may not answer depending on the reason.
