Buying a car
Hi,
I've just passed my driving test and I'm looking for a car, but I don't know where to start! Can anyone give me any tips? I'm hoping to spend less than £1000, and I'd like a desiel car with as low insurence as possible! So far I'm getting quotes of £1,300 +...
I've seen a 1998 VW Polo for 995, does anyone know if that's a good price or where I can find out what that sort of car might be worth?
I hope someone can help!

£1000 is banger money nowadays. £1000 for diesel is serious banger money and at £1000 expect faults. £995 for a 98 plate Polo sounds OK and TBH as long as its tidy and runs well you shouldn't go far wrong. They're reasonably cheap to maintain and fix as well.0

If you've just passed your test and are relatively young, insurance is going to be the killer, even for a banger, and it comes round again after 12 months.
To get an idea what a particular budget might get you, put your criteria into autotrader or parkers sites and see what's available. Not suggesting you buy through them, but it gives you an idea of what you can look for.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
