Don't Know Where This Money Has Come From

I went online today to take a look at my Abbey account.I had a big surprise when I noticed a transfer of £400 on 13th November,as I am not expecting any transfers into my account.

I called Abbey and asked where this money had come from and gave them the sort code and account number from the reference that had been given with the transfer. They said that they could not tell me the name of the account holder, just that the transfer was from another Abbey account.
I was concerned and asked what would happen if the holder of that account had made a mistake and I was told that if they had the money would be removed from my account and given back to them.

Now I know this money isn't mine, but it is in my account now and surely once the transfer has been made there is no way it can be cancelled or claimed back?

Years ago, a very similar thing happened to me. But it was a standing order - turned out it was my boyfriend who was concerned I didn't have enough loot to cover my bills. BUT (and this amazed me at the time) they wouldn't or couldn't cancel it.
  • As far as I know, if someone was just doing a bank transfer, and just mistyped the number, they CAN'T force you to give it back. Of course, your conscience may tell you to do it anyway... especially if you consider that person is probably £800 out of pocket due to having to pay the bill to the proper person...

My bf's flatmate went travelling for 6 months and set up a standing order for his part of the mortgage to be paid to the 3rd housemate, but mistyped a digit. After two months of no money, they discovered what had happened, but the bank couldn't help retrieve it.

You will probably find the bank won't give any information about the person, and won't contact them for you, so you'll have to wait until they realise what they have done. If I were you I'd stick it in a savings account, get a few quid's interest, and then if you hear from them you can return it if you so wish. Just imagine if it was your money you'd lost...

yep, i was about to suggest morg_monster's idea too
  • Just found out it came from a person who was going to buy our property. They mucked us about for seven weeks saying that they were waiting for the deposit needed from a famiy member. They then said that they wanted to rent the property until they could get the deposit, but I put a deadline of 4 weeks to get the deposit and complete the sale.If they still didnt have the money I would ask them to leave and re-market the house. They decided not to rent.

This person has cost us nearly £3000 because we moved out so they could rent until the deposit was found, turned out that they had no way of getting the money and just wanted to rent indefinately. Our house was off the market for 6 months because of unkept promises by them and like I say, cost us £3000 in extra payments on top of rent for our property now.

They set up the standing order for the rent and forgot to cancel it.
Now I will give it back, but I want to give them a taste of their own medicine for a while, like,"I'm too busy at work to sort it out" or "oh yes,I'll do that as soon as I can",then not bother.
I know it's horrible, but we are struggling because of them so lets see how they like it!
