NPower - No Gas bill after a year (yet another thread!)

I just called NPower to remind them to charge me for gas after not receiving a bill having signed up almost a year ago... after previously experiencing similar from British Gas business. I was told that they couldn't legally charge me for more than 9 months worth when it's all resolved as it's not my fault they didn't bill me (or even set me up an account) and they've now registered a complaint on my behalf.

To clarify - I was sent a welcome to NPower letter which stated I would have my meter automatically read if I didn't reply within 7 days in Feb 10 - I can't read my own meter as it's in a secure area of the development, we never heard of any attempt to read the meter. I've had nothing since and got concerned when I realised its now been a year.

Just wondering where I stand on this legally - is it correct they can't charge for a certain period? Seems daft I'm expected to remind them to bill me for their services!!

Thanks - I guess I just wait and see what they try to bill me - if they get around to it this time!

The management company or landlord is obliged to give you (and the utility co) access to the meters, so enforce that right and read your meter ASAP.

@PNPSUKNET - Yep - it's a fairly new development, when we moved in we had a note which said others were experiencing problems switching suppliers - it took me about 6 phone calls playing supplier tennis to work out we were with British Gas Business and to set up the NPower switch. I had hoped that was it but apparently not!

@macman - We have to arrange to get our meters read through our management company, the meter people can go to security to be let in but it definitely doesn't help - our last electricity read was aborted before security arrived to let the guy in.
