Independent Travel - disruption/terrorism cover

We're planning on travelling to California this summer and booking flights and accommodation independently. What I am worried about is if my travel to the US is disrupted by volcanic eruption, earthquake or act of terrorism that prevents my departure to or from the US.

There are some good policies that now offer travel disruption insurance (eg AXA) as part of the policy and cover volcanic eruption or earthquake, however no-one seems to offer cover the losses I may incur if unable to get on holiday if the airports were closed due to a terrorist attack (somewhere).

I am worried that as we will be prebooking some accommodation we will lose those costs as I presume that we would (eventually) get a refund on the flights so thoses costs are covered. And if we incurred extra hotel costs in the US due to having to stay longer until airports reopened due to terrorism there could be costs there.

I'm not hopeful but would welcome any advice you have. Just to add we have minor medical issues that are normally accepted with slight increase on the policy, but need a company that can do this.

Have a look at Sainsbury's insurance as it has an Independent Traveller option.

Depends on what accommodation you book - but many US hotel chains allow you to cancel on the day by 4pm or even 6pm without penalty. You may miss out on their absolute cheapest rate this way but it does give you flexibility

War and terrorism are standard general exclusions on virtually every policy - I doubt if you'll find a mainstream policy that covers them. A specialist broker might help.
