1 bank, 2 accounts, can they....?

My friend has 2 accounts with 1 bank (cant remember bank at the mo), 1 of the accounts is in arrears & the other had his salary in. Yesterday he went to the cash machine & his card was kept, after investigating in the bank they told him that because he hadn't paid the past 2 months loan (approx £60 worth, £700 left on arrears) they had taken all the money in his other account (approx £500) to cover it & closed both accounts. Can they do this? Does he have any comeback? He opened a new account a few months ago so he will start paying his salary into that but he has no money for the rest of the month.

Yes they can, had he had 2 accounts with different banks then they couldn't of done it.

Yes they can do it. He can check his T&Cs.

Whether they should do it is another matter.

But this is the reason *why* it is always recommended to open another account with someone who isn't a creditor when you are having trouble with debt.
