with having 2 in nappies at the mo we buy tesco value wipes at 18p a pack, you have to use twice as many but its far better than paying over £1 a pack. we buy them by the box load 12 at a time as we use them for cleaning highchair and dirty faces etc.they work great for us :money:

Thanks Angchris. Are the Value wipes OK for small babies? I'm always worried that they might get a rash.

my 2 are absolutely fine with the baby wipes...i dont think they have any different ingredients to any other baby wipe...definately worth a go in my opinion. i think the only time my 2 have had any sort of rash is when they have been accidently sat in poop for a little while as it burns them.
also have tried all supermarket nappies all are very good but lidl nappies (tou jours)win hands down for me they just feel so much nicer to use so must be comfier on bubs...they are £5 something per pack ..bargain!

Or wash their hair with a tiny blob of proper shampoo. Cradle cap is dried on build up of grease caused by the sebaceous glands producing excess oil from having the mothers hormones from the pregnancy.. scrub it well and most won't get it in the first place.

I second the tesco value nappy bags suggestion, at last nappy bags that dont smell revolting!

As well as ebay, the netmums website has local "nearly new" boards where you can buy baby equipment and lots of other bits for a fraction of the cost of new. I got a M&P moses basket and stand for £15, changing table for £15 and Mothercare bouncy chair for £10, all in very good condition.
  • Home bargains do powder dispensers for 69p and £1 compared to Tescos's that are £2.04!! The £1 are exactly the same as Tesco, the 69p holds 6ozs at a push

  • Check locally on ebay, ive got baby things so cheap near me as people wont post bigger items. By refining you search to either ten or twenty miles from your postcode. Ive got things worth £80 for £20. Best buy being two gliding cribs for £8. you can get changing units cots pushchairs bouncy chairs, for the fraction of the price.
I tend to bulk buy nappies when theyre on offer e.g asda baby event in the size they are in and next size up, and same with wetwipes.

The best advice is to not buy anything until you find that you need it. E.g. don't go overboard when you're pregnant buying pumps, fancy sterilisers, a whole cupboard full of shampoos, creams, potions etc - wait until bubs is born and get it then, when you actually need it. You'll probably find that half the time you don't actually need it.

I bought a huge bottle of baby shampoo from ASDA when my son was born nearly 6 years ago - and it's still going strong - did me two children, and I think it cost about a pound.

Other advice - fancy baby wipes at £3 a pack are a waste of money, but the absolute cheapest are probably too harsh for baby's skin. I get the mid-range Tesco ones, they're about 80p a pack but are often on offer (e.g. 3 packs for £2).

I got a brilliant Mamas and Papas crib from the local charity shop for £10 - so there's no need to spend a fortune on fancy nursery furniture. It turns up regularly in charity shops because nobody keeps it for long, and it's usually in great condition.

Clothes - again wait until baby is born before buying loads. Partly because you'll be given a lot as gifts and partly because you don't know how big the baby will be. It might be teeny weeny so you'll need teeny weeny baby gros. But on the other hand baby might be a 10 lb monster and so you'd have wasted money if you bought a load in the newborn size. Also, clothes from e.g. Tesco/ASDA are so cheap that if it turns out you didn't buy enough then you can easily go out and get a few more packs.
  • Im pregnant with my first and im trying to get my head around everything, lol Where did evryone buy bedding? sheets and cellular blankets , the prices seem to very wildly. I went to BM bargains and saw two stretchy fit pram sheets for £2.99 (im using my carrycot as moses basket so want to have sheets in it ) I bought them but not too sure of quality,my mum says they will be fine but just wanted to know what everyone had done
Thanks to MSE for making it possible for me save to buy my new flat , yay !!
