Go on the Trip Advisor BKK discussion forum.
There are some good destination experts on there.
For me, 2 or 3 days. Stay near the river or Skytrain, and use both to get around during daylight hours.
I prefer to stay near Khao San road.
A trip up the river from terminus to terminus takes approx 1 hour (costs about 20 bahts), you'll see loads, and be mixing it with the locals.
Other must dos (imo) are Chinatown, Lumphini Park (+night market), and a few hours in Khao San.
If you have a couple of spare days then consider a trip to Kanchanaburi, preferably by the atmospheric 3rd Class train from Thonburi train station. Very inexpensive, easy to do, and you won't regret it!

Thanks for all your advice. I'm looking forward to researching what I want to do there. I've just booked my flights and I'll be in Bangkok for 2.5 days in January. Can't wait!

January! You do believe in advance planning don't you? I'll be there in 6 weeks and haven't sorted anything out yet.
