Scanner and printer

Hi,
I'm looking for some ideas please of what to look for and what to avoid when choosing a printer and scanner, and suggestions as to best models.
Currently have cheap and cheerful versions of both which give me so-so results and are very slow (which currently is an annoyance rather than an issue).
However I'm planning to scan and print a lot of docs and photos over the next few months so I want something that will give me good results, ease and speed of use.
Also would you recommend separate scanner and printer or one machine that does both ?
How much would I be looking at for decent quality machines ? Could I get something decent for £100 - £150 ? Will it cost me a fortune in ink cassettes ?
Thank you so much
Linda xx

I have a CANON MX310. Used at work for copious amounts of scanning, faxing and printing. has been a great "workhorse" ink reasonably priced. (i have to change the black every month or so, the colour every 6-7 weeks.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

An Epson will probably give you the better availability of compatibles
There is the SX515W which has an RRP of £150 though presently available for £51

The PX660 would give better photos on account of using 6 cartridges but has a lower rated scanner

Inks here, amongst others T0801 -T0806 or T0807 Multipack

You could also consider seperates to give a better scanning option

we have a canon pixma printer because you can replace all the colours seperately which works out very economically compared to the models with all the colours in one cartridge.
Some scanners have the facility to scan film too which might be useful and is worth keeping in mind when looking.
If you check reviews on line for the machines you are interested in, that is a good way to discover pitfalls of various models.0
