  • Ceridwen, thanks for the info on Google maps. We go to Whitby once a month and it was interesting to compare the estimate against the actual cost.

Pork Belly cooks brilliantly in a Remoska ( score rub in salt and thyme and cook on a rack, save the dripping to have on toast).

On the subject of Water Rates, I'm metered and it costs £400 per year and that is for my house and our small camp site if that helps decision making.

I think perhaps we all need to chill out a little bit and get some perspective. :o

If there's a bit of chat, perhaps that in itself is supporting someone who needs it. I think the current chattiness is due to people being petrified of voicing an opinion lest they be reported or cause the thread to be closed again. It will settle down, I'm sure. I do fear that there might be a little possessiveness (is that a word?!) going on, but the popularity of the thread shows it's needed and wanted by the posters, so I'm sure it will continue, whether or not it has the word "tough" in the title.

Kitschy I agree, I was struck by how many lurkers popped out to say they were glad the thread was back again.

I think we'll see another influx after the Budget and/or when interest rates go up. That combined with risng oil prices will make things even tougher. I don't think it's scaremongering to say that the situation in the Middle East could have unforeseen consequences.

I don't tend to post my daily doings on this thread unless there is something I think might be useful for other people . But I'm not in a situation where I feel I'm struggling away with no-one to help me and every day is tough. If we just help people to stay focused I think it is still fulfilling the purpose of the thread.

But I agree it helps if people try to stay on topic
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Thanks guys..I already do the things you have suggested, have been os all my adult life ..mum used to say I was 20 going on 40 lol:rotfl:! But I learnt from her and she learnt from her mum etc..I also learnt from my dad and am quite practical round the house. I had my 10 yr old ds screwing the bottom back on the vac yesterday when my dd got string tangled round it whilst helping!
BTW Now I am a couple of years off 40 I feel like I am 40 going on 20:D;)
Its more the financial side of things I am worried about for us all and can only see struggle ahead. I wish the future didnt look so bleak:(
I think it is bleak, and by acknowledging that you will handle it better than those who are burying their heads in the sand - and there are a surprising number who are.

You are teaching your children by example, and in turn, they will be better equipped to live successfully as financially savvy adults, which is a great gift to give any child :) And they clearly have your love and your time, which are the greatest gifts of all :)

BertieBots I think you're already doing really well and agree with all RAS amongst others has said regards to passing on skills.

My boys all love to read and over the years through various means I have also tried to put together a decent 'self help' library for them containing simple cookbooks, books on how to garden, self reliance, the MSE books and a few more diverse ones such as Back to Basics and John Seymours books.

They are my 'insurance policy' should they need to know something if I'm no longer around as well as practical lessons we have learnt together over the years.

My boys are all typical techie kids but can all also sew, cook, garden and are as tight as gnats b*ms when it comes to money :rotfl:

Things may get harder but a house filled with love and laughter helps so much in the hardest of times..

I found Googlemaps have added a little thing to their site recently. When I asked the site for "directions" from my house to somewhere else there was the estimated petrol cost there at the bottom of the directions.

Thank you, but I cant find directions on there, could you post a direct link please:)

Right where it says directions then :o

edit: it allows you to put the cost per litre in and adjust if your car is a heavy user, brilliant

That is so useful! Thanks. I've been using Google map directions for a while now, but hadn't noticed the petrol costs bit. Basically, google is telling me that it costs me 19p per mile to run the car. Gotta cut back!
