I worked out our bills today. We are using £2.50 a week calor gas for the cooker, this includes constant kettle boiling for tea
And we are using £5 a week for electric, which we think is a wee bit high. Then we use £30 a week coal, which is heating and hot water. (Big stove on 24/7). I'd like to use less elect, that's just lights and tv and the pump for the radiators and I think it should be lower.
Don't forget fridge/ freezer, pc plus any other pooter stuff like routers/ modems etc, washing machine? £5 pw sounds pretty good to me!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

O god true - forgot about the freezers and the router and the laptop! WM on 3 times a week. My brain is on a go slow I think.0

gailey,
it's certainly a mad, mad world out there. when we see how high our morals are when it comes to dealing with other countries we have a little insight just how easy it is for the smaller and not so small things to slip if they can balance the bottom line, pr and re-election.
I think it's a really good idea for everyone to have an interest in an area or two and badger them between elections. Not only to maintain and push for higher standards and morals but also to let elected representatives know we are keeping our eyes and ears open.

Thank you soo much for the recipe!! Little sis and I just had it for lunch with lamb chops and it was utterly divine! I jiggled with the spices a little and added some sauted, wild mushrooms.....perhaps a few too many, as we seem to have quite a lot left over. I'm guessing it will work cold too??
Beccah - glad you enjoyed it. No, I've never tried it cold - we've always eaten it as a 'main' so there has been no leftovers - but perhaps you could report back to us? It'd really start to earn it's stripes as an OS recipe if the base could have various ingredients added to it or it could be served hot or cold - don't you think?
On the subject of thank yous, i'd just like to thank the poster who on this thread (or an incarnation of it I think) when discussing bath towel usage, said about the tip they'd picked up from the One Foot in the Grave sitcom regarding when bathing/showering using a flannel to 'dry' and then the towel to do a final 'buff & polish'. We've trialled this in Greying towers and have to say it has worked for us. In a cold, damp house wet towels are an absolute nightmare - using this method has kept the towels much drier and therefore nicer to use. Thank you poster whoever you were.

camping prices
other than the summer holidays we use the basic sites and use a nice one less than an hour away sometimes, which is only £8.50 a night with ehu, in the summer we tend to go for a site that has a swimming pool and close to the beach, my daughter thinks shes a fish and needs water lol, but we dont do the sort of "parks" type camping if you know what i mean, if i take daughter out of school for a few days this one works out about £26 a night.
Bitsy bean - we have a caravan, grandma247- we dont mind where we camp like different places, bertibots- i know what you mean about the weather, had a river running through our awning last july lol
going to give house a good clean today, got college friend coming over and i have no cake:(ohhh i hope we figure out how to make those dumplings, omnomnomnomnom

I'm feeling a bit down in the dumps today. Went to bed at 11pm last night and Idiot Boy (the guy whose flat is immediately above mine) came in at midnight with his mates and has proceeded to keep me awake all night. It's the third night on the trot. I have ME and really struggle if I don't get at least 7 hours sleep, and I haven't had that in the past 72 hours. Yesterday at work was hell on wheels as I kept transposing numbers, making me a menace with the customers' mobiles. I was glad to end my shift without having made a major goof-up, IYKWIM. Also got so exhausted a couple of days ago that I lost the thermostat and just had the cold shakes, even in a warm room with blankets and hot water bottles. I hate it when that happens, feels like going back to the bad old days.
OK, whinge over, sorry to vent my pathetic little troubles on the thread.
I was old-styling like a good 'un yesterday. Made a journey down to my favourite shopping centre, the shabby one a bit out of the centre and at the end of a street full of charity shops and ethnic supermarkets. Restocked my dried kidney beans, found out that it was 30p cheaper for an idential brand 2 kg bag in one shop than another, and yes
I am so cheap I backtracked 30 metres.
Also went to my favourite indy greengrocer to forage in the whoopsies section, which is normally 3 bags of produce for £1 but certain favoured people (inc me) get 4 bags if there's enough to go around. Only yesterday I got 5 bags so am eating stewed pears and the flat is awash with satsumas and Russet apples, plus carrots in the fridge. Love ma greengrocer to bits. We also had a nice chat about market towns and market stallholding and I learned that the stallholder style of having things displayed at £1 per steel bowl is called London Style. The things you learn, eh? Shame another customer came in and interupted us!
I've had my potatoes chitting for 2 weeks now and the shoots are growing strongly, which reminds me that I must get my finger out at the lottie this weekend or they'll be ready before the ground it. My lottie prep was badly disrupted last autumn by Mum's cancer diagnosis and treatment so I'm playing catch up yet again. I envy relatively few things in this life, but a tidy and trim veggie patch always lifts my spirits.
Roll on spring and how I would love to see some sunshine!Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Hi GreyQueen
Sorry to hear the little !!!!!! is back to his normal tricks again.
Three days in a row of sleep disturbance like that is enough to make ANYONE feel like "death warmed up" - even if they havent got ME. So - sorry to hear that. YOu'll be putting in an order yet for one of those voodoo dolls at this rate will you?:rotfl:
Just try and remind yourself of JUST how much bad karma he is piling up for himself - I wouldnt want to be in his shoes when that "bill gets presented for payment":D
Meanwhile - is there anywhere nearby you could "camp out" for at least an occasional night whilst you wait it out for him to be slung out? Personally - I'd even be thinking in terms of camping out up the shed on the allotment for at least the odd night whilst waiting. Do you have a suitable shed up the allotment?
I think at least the odd night away from a temporary problem like that (whilst waiting for it to be resolved) can make all the difference.
I have a particular friend who is normally very calm/"considered"/laid back - but every so often finds there is a row of "noisy nights" disturbing his home and I've seen him veering on a breakdown before now because of this. At one point he said he couldnt stand it any longer and asked if he could "camp out" in the dining room in my place if he needed to. I was due to be away on holiday for most of the time the noise was likely to continue - but knew I could trust him. So he came over and "camped out" for a couple of nights in order to catch up on his sleep and knows "the door is open" if it happens again and he needs a break from it. I think he finds it helpful just knowing there is a bolthole he can escape to if he needs to that he also finds helpful.0
