mardatha it is a worry isn't it.
I feel that a lot of people will be in the same situation as us - my DLA pays for things like the batteries for my mobility scooter and other equipment that makes life easier, plus expensive trips to the hospital in London, but evidently if you only have difficulty walking you will be deemed fit to work, which angers me because if an able bodied person can't get work how is a disabled person going to.
We had to buy a new freezer just before Christmas because ours died so we got a very large chest one and I have been topping it up for months now and it will be back to the old days when we had to scrimp and scrape to live.
So I have looked out my old wartime cookbooks and my thrifty cook books from the 1970's and will just cut back as much as I can.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

BB/Mardatha, do you have a link to an article or other info about the DLA changes, I was under the impression it would be several years before they were implemented? It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Hi everyone
Super-lurker here. I don't post but I read most evenings. I find I can't commit to you all as much as you commit to each other so I don't post.
I too am very grateful the thread's back. The Tough threads really are inspirational. They don't fit the mould of any one thread and I'm glad and grateful MSE Andrea has agreed to embrace this.
You are all such an inspiration, each in your own way. The spirit with which you all help/praise/commiserate with each other is so heartening. If only our real lives were so supported eh!
The Tough threads, at their very core are money saving. Imagine how much it would cost in the counselling you all give/receive here.

It is on the conservative web site
Social Care and Disability
The Government believes that people needing care deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We understand the urgency of reforming the system of social care to provide much more control to individuals and their carers, and to ease the cost burden that they and their families face.- We will establish a commission on long-term care, to report within a year. The commission will consider a range of ideas, including both a voluntary insurance scheme to protect the assets of those who go into residential care, and a partnership scheme as proposed by Derek Wanless.
- We will break down barriers between health and social care funding to incentivise preventative action.
- We will extend the greater roll-out of personal budgets to give people and their carers more control and purchasing power.
- We will reform Access to Work, so disabled people can apply for jobs with funding already secured for any adaptations and equipment they will need.

JackieG - just popped in to say a big thanks, also to MSE Andrea.
Will catch up later - have spent the best part of 2 hours rereading Gingham's menu plans and made notes & copied recipes.
Look forward to joining you all tomorrow with my new thrifty plans for more veggie meals

Actually BB htat bit you highlighted, really surprises me, aren't employers legally required to provide adaptations and not discriminate against someone on the basis of disability? Why would the government need to provide money for this? This screams of some sort of con somewhere, I am really interested now to find out the details of this. I just looked to see if the bbc are doing the dig in seeds this year - sadly they are not, but I have lots of seeds left from last year that I can plant out, but I will not make the mistake of planting too many things at the same time; I had so many lettuces last year that I had to give lots away, so this year I will be sowing sparsely every three weeks and that should help, we will also go foraging again this year.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I've not long started posting here, I feel a bit like I'm intruding. . . .
Anyway I will have to try that carrot cake recipe, I refuse to buy it because it's so expensive so will have to have a go myself.
I've found that I'm barely spending much on shopping. Not long back from A**a and was £46 but I bought some spices and flour and loads of yoghurts, petit filous pack of 6 for 20p!! I'll freeze them if they're not used in time.
Also had to get loo roll and pull up pants for the wee one and bought a few treats for us since we had been saving for moving and furniture so weren't having any treats at all. Since I've been using this board my money just seems to go so much further, I don't have to buy so much at the shops for my cupboards to be full to bursting.
Petrol is a nightmare though, I only normally drive at the weekends for going to get the big shop, uni etc so my normal £5 doesn't get me as far as it used to
Once I get the pots and things to grow even a few bits of fruit and veg I'm hopeful that we'll be saving even more.
We've been taking more walks out and about, good for our health, cheap and a great way to fill an hour, for a 2 year old he doesn't do too bad
Looking forward to keeping up with this thread.Credit Card: £796 Left/£900 October 2011 :eek:Store Card: £100 October 2011
