re rabbit...ts a super meat. Very versitile. Makes a great ragu for pasta for example. Quails eggs are delicious, and we've been thinking about quails for a long while. I think they are tasty too!0

I am soooo jeallous of anyone paying £.80 for a rabbit....I am lucky if one of the local butchers has a frozen one for €6, I treat myself every so often as I love rabbit.

You cant live on rabbit meat though, its not substantial enough. Is ok if you cook with loads of veg. My son and his pal used to take them & sell to the local Chinese (honestly) very cheap.
TY for that book link Born Blond thats great.
Feral pigeons are crawling with disease inc TB, dont eat anything but the breast.
We had a dead badger on the road here yesterday that mysteriously vanished after 3 hours...:D somebody will be tucking into badger steaks !0 -
You're right Mardatha, a person couldn't live exclusively on bunny-meat and only a madman or the truly desperate would have to. There was something about it on QI a wee while back. It went into the "I did not know that and this info might come in handy for a pub quiz sometime" memory filing-cabinet.
Did you get your sweeties on your shopping-trip OK yesterday? I saw on the weather forecast that some of our Scottish brethren should be expecting more snow tonight. I've alerted the rescue helicopter peeps to prepare for a potential sweetie-drop just in case.0 -
Eww, wouldn't fancy eating feral pigeons from the city centre but and sorely tempted by the big fat wood pigeons on the lottie.....My Nan had rabbit for her first ever Xmas dinner as a new bride (1940) and remarked 70 years later that she didn't even LIKE rabbit.....:rotfl:
I agree city centre birds don't appeal but the big fat ones picking around in our garden would make a tasty bite - just not sure how to catch them and then wouldn't really want to gut, hang & pluck them unless I was very, very hungry:oOutside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

Aaw see how kind people are Mardatha, sending sweeties by chopper for you - i think we are all just so glad we havent got snow ourselves that we are feeling guilty:rotfl:
I wouldnt eat feral pigeon unless I was desperate so as soon as I have eaten all the wood pigeons (next wednesday!) I will start on the flying rats. Is it actually legal to go shooting wood pigeons? I have a lot that meet up for a chat in my back garden.
Am sat here with a tea towel on my shoulder so that if OH pops up I can say I was just getting a recipeReally I got side tracked and wanted to nosey at what was going on here.
I went in Mr T today - and I am so sorry I did, still finding it depressing to see the prices but got a good deal on diet coke, I can only have it if its a bargain now. Ah well must go and stir my tater hash - full of veg and lentils - yummyClearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Pigeons are ok to shoot but not in inner cities....:D you might "accidentally" shoot one of your neighbours ! I can just see the headline in the Sun now... "Rising Prices Drove Me To It says manchester mother who machine-gunned whole street" :rotfl:
It's absolutely baltic up here today, a wind that goes right through instead of around you. Snow still lying but its just a covering. Very windy and tomorrow morning we're to have 75mph gales.
I have no sweeties...:(:(:(0 -

Not substantial enough? What’s that mean?
Meat contains protein what does rabbit contain? protein.
The only differnce is the lack of fat which you can get from other sources. Maybe you should explain your views.
I've heard it too, and googled and found this

however I have an old cookery book that was my great grannies and there are some "interesting" recipes in there, that I daresay I could get in to trouble for cooking today ! sparrow pie ? calves head soup ?
I remember watching a program some years ago about how poor kids survived in the countryside in the depression , rook pie was mentioned
