How will you be posting? Is it new or old, worth a lot of money?
Do you need basic packaging or do you want to package nicely?
New or recycled?
I'd use a mailing bag (you can get lovely colourful ones cheaply on ebay), a plastic bag (like a zip-lock NOT shop carrier bag) to protect from getting wet etc, and folded in tissue paper (white one as coloured apparently can stain if it gets dump).

I have sold coats in the past and have used large plastic mailing sacks, th etamper proof type. I fold and bag the coat and then just pack it into the mailer.
If it is a linen coat or one liable to a lot of creasing you may prefer to use a box.
Due to the weight I certainly would be suggesting a properly made bag or box rather than just trying to tape it inside something.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. thanks springer211 and soolin for your suggestions! the coat is new and bulky. hence my confusion. i was worried about creasing if i tried to roll it into a normal size mailing bag. might try to see if i can get hold of a bigger bag or go for a box.0

Here's examples of large bags on ebay:

If the coat is heavy it is likely to be over 2kg and going with a carrier or standard parcels. Weight bands are quite broad for SP and with a carrier it is often a flat rate up to 25kg so you probably will pay no more with the extra weight of a box. You can afford to pack it well.0
