I've just had a nudge from Microsoft telling me updates are ready to be installed.. I clicked, clicked on the install doofer and then get this message in a window with a red cross -

Couldn't instal programs
You already have different build flavor of Windows Live

I had no idea it came in different flavors and strawberry would make a nice change, but I haven't the foggiest what the lovely Bill Gates is wibbling on about

Can anyone shed any light on this ? I'm on Vista home.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

It generally means that an element of Windows Live that you have installed is conflicting with the installation of the updated version. Often, but not always, this can be remedied by removing Windows Live Essentials.

Microsoft supply a guidance page for this error here - http://messenger-support.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8B3F39C76A8B853F!15930.entry - scroll down a bit for the Windows Vista steps.
  • In geek speak, the term 'vanilla' is used for a standard 'bland' build of a machine, so you would say a 'vanilla build' - this might help explain the usage of the word flavour (spelt in English not USA version!)

Thanks for the info. I've had a look, and read it as something to do with Messenger, which I haven't used for years and don't plan to ever use in the future. If this is the case, can I ignore the update instal?

To be honest, it could be an issue with anything that is part of the Windows Live package, which admittedly, is a lot of useless gumph for most people.

You can probably ignore it if you don't use any of the Windows Live stuff, which does include Messenger, but does include some other tools. If you do use some of the Windows Live stuff it is probably worth trying to fix it.

If you do try to fix it and those instructions don't help then drop me a note by PM if you like and I'll try and find an alternate remedy for your problem.

Thanks Tropez. I've had a thorough read up over the weekend, so many thanks for the offer of help if I can't sort it out.
