MSE News: Nationwide revamps credit card with new overseas perk

  • The only thing that's making me think is does visa give a better forex than mastercard?
  • Nationwide !!!!!! me off once too often last year....I moved everything to Co-operative Bank.....and left the NW account open just incase they ever do get sensible. They will have to maintain the account. Childish I know.....but to be charged 12p in Interest by NW when I incorrectly moved my savings from the current account to a savings account instead of the other way around to pay off my Credit Card for all off 5 mins until I noticed my mistake was all too much.
Today, my BEST is good enough.
  • If Nationwide had any sense, they would offer free overseas card use for people who use NW as their main bank a/c i.e. all direct debits & salary banked with them.
I am still a NW customer, but I have now got a Clarity card for overseas spending. Maybe I should move my loyalty to Halifax as NW does offer NOT me any interest on my current a/c or offer any other perks.

If you use their card in the UK, then they'll reward you. If you are just trying to take advantage of their offer (thus costing them money), then why should you get the reward?

Don't see it as much of a reward to be able to use their card commission free. I'm sure you're not costing them money by using a card commission free overseas. If you were, then I'm sure PO, Clarity and Zero wouldn't be offering zero commission on purchases.

As a long-standing Nationwide member, I was very disappointed when NW slammed the door in my face (re overseas use of NW debit cards) alongside the chancers. They could have found a way to keep me loyal.

I aggre with the sentiments expressed here.
Nationwide require monthley deposit of £750 for their Travel insurance. They should have made that a condition for using their debit card abroad.
I now have a Norwich & Peterborough debit card. They only require £500 per month plus about 5 transactions a month.

It's a reward relative to what most of the competition are offering - which is charges of about 2.5-3%.

PO, Clarity and Zero offer it free to everyone as a marketing tool - get people opening a credit card and they hope to draw them in with other products too.

That's exactly what it is with NW. A marketing tool to get a headline and possibly to draw you to other products. Nothing wrong with that of course.

Still don't think it's a "reward". If I get something cheaper at Tescos than Sainsburys, it doesn't make it a "reward" from Tesco.
  • 5/10 for effort. This is the sort of thing they should've done with the Flexaccount, something to weed out the !!!!!!!!!!s/savy customer depending on your perspective.

  • Well it's up on their website now. Oh should I say "our" website, as I'm a member.. ha ha ha.

They got their bullet point "Commission-free purchases abroad - Enjoy unlimited commission-free purchases abroad until 31st July 2011 plus the ability to earn more commission-free foreign usage."

You have to click on "apply" and then go for the PDF T+Cs to see how the scheme works.

Intro offers not available to existing cardholders: "You can apply to change your Nationwide Credit Card at any time but any introductory rate or offer is not available if you have previously held a Nationwide Credit Card with an introductory rate or offer."

  • That's not very fair is it. No point for me to change.
