Wescot Address verification????

Options
Hi,

Just after a bit of advice. I received a letter from Wescot credit services today trying to verify if I live at my address. The thing is I have absolutely no bad debt and in my entire 8 year credit history the only blemish is a single late payment. I've checked all the credit ref agencies in the last month and no that there is nothing bad against my name. I'm on top of my payments and am a bit obsessive about keeping a clean credit file, so I KNOW I don't owe anything to anyone I don't know about.

Why do they want to know I live here? I really don't get it. It says if I don't respond then they will assume I live here. I don't really want to contact them at all. Another thing, while my credit record is fine, my wife has quite a few bad debts that have defaulted years ago and most of them are statute barred or about to be statute barred. We have never had our names linked and don't have any joint accounts or anything of that nature. She isn't on the electoral role here or on any of the bills. As far as a paper trail is concerned she doesn't live here. Could they be trying to track her down?

I really don't get it and want to know what they want but don't want to contact them. Would it be worth checking my credit files again even though I did it within the last month?

Thanks for any help.....

  • You could call them and ask them more about the debt i.e. exactly what it relates to, and if it's definitely nothing to do with you, tell them they've got the wrong person and not to contact you again. Some of these companies will send out letters to anyone who has the same or similar name to the one they're trying to contact (I've had this experience), and that might be what's happened to you (although it's interesting that your wife has outstanding debts..)

Do NOT contact them! As mentioned it's very possible that you have a similar name and details as someone they are interested in. However if you contact them they are not beyond altering minor details on their records so it's your DOB and not the correct one... you can trust that if you do not have the right DOB they certainly won't tell you that but will happily let you pay whatever debt they have bought whether it's yours or not.
Ignore them and bin their letters.

    Certainly sometime soon, yes.

It would not be surprising if they have added a default etc, despite not having verified anything.

As said, no need to contact them at this point, and in most cases it is counter productive to do so.

Well, I've just checked with equifax and there is nothing there at all unexpected. I'll have to wait a couple of days for the experian to come through the post. My wife has told me that she thinks wescot had been after her at our last address. Could they have made a connection? Surely, they shouldn't be trying to contact me regarding her?
