Anyone help with my connection issues please?

Netgear DGN3500 ADSL router. Been working ok wirelessly but now more and more of my equipment is connecting via ethernet cable, I'm having issues with the main pc.

I don't know if it's a problem at the pc end or the router end. For no apparent reason, I will get a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark in my sys tray, over the internet connection. When this happens I can't connect via wire for love nor money, no matter how many times I restart the pc or the router. Wireless still works fine.

I don't know if the fact there is more than one device now connecting via wire, is relevent or not. (Router>switch>patch panel). That said, I tried unplugging everything and just having a cable going from the relevent pc socket on patch panel to router and it was just the same. I have 2 ethernet jacks in that room and tried both with the same result.

The other devices (xboxes at present) are fine it just seems to be the pc that has the issue.

Windows tried to fix the problem and comes up with ' Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration'.

So how do I fix this? And why does it keep happening?

Edit: I should add that when this happens, the pc doesn't find the Home Network that's set up, it reverts back to Public Network.

Do you know the IP address scheme that your wired network uses, and how they are assigned? Normally they will be assigned via DHCP by the router, and hence will be in the same IP address space as the router.

If you open a terminal window on the PC when its internet access is not working and type in ipconfig /all, what do you get back?

A black window opens for a millisecond then shuts again. It's so quick it's unreadable.

Just checked router, DHCP is ticked.

IP address on main pc is showing as 169. something or other. (That's what's shown after going through the windows trouble shooter.) It should be 192.xxxx?

The 169 address is given when it cannot get an IP address from your router.

Note you should not normally have both wireless and wired connected at the same time.

Which windows version do you have ?

    You could try

click the start button, select run, then type

    cmd

press return, you get a box with white writing.

    type in

    ipconfig

    and press enter
you will get a list of IP addresses.

    type in

    ipconfig /release

    press enter

    type in

    ipconfig /renew

    press enter

    type in

    ipconfig /flushdns

    press enter

then see if it works. note space between ipconfig and /

Did you try disabling the network adapter and then re enabling it....If it can't get an address from the router, could be the router is setup only to give a small amount of IP's out.......or else the problem is at the network card on your pc.......try as above..if it still doesn't work remove it and install it from device manager.

I've got a DGN3300 which is the DGN3500 but with 100MBit ports instead of Gigabit. Its a stinking pile of cack compared to the DG834G it replaced however all my issues have been wifi.

I would suggest manually configuring the IP address on the PC.

I would suggest HAmmy's is probably best the solution, I Use IP addresses on my own Wired connections, static no DHCP , outside of the DHCP range on the router, in fact I do the same for my wireless kit that never leaves home as well.
