Once you have found a builder also check them out on companies house etc (if they are ltd) I wouldn't also pay one that wants cash up front, a decent builder will be able to buy materials on account from soemwhere and you can then pay them in stages throughout the build once work has been completed.

My builder,my hammer, rated people, there all the same,i wanted to see what sort of quotes ans tradesmen i got, none of them list soundproofing as there line of work, but when i ask they have done it.I used rated people last year for a sparky,i wanted two extra sockets putting in my hallway. He did that ok neat and tidy. Then i asked him to look at my broken extractor fan in the bathroom,he wanted to charge me £80 for a new one, they are half that price,so much for fitting it and then he said he had to check the light fittings to see where it was wired from,he wanted £20 per light fitting to look.Robber and conmen sent on his way.

Have you tried Checkatrade? I think it is slightly better than the others (although it still has its faults). The only problem is that it only covers certain parts of the UK. I know someone who has used it successfully (as a customer) in Brighton.

What about the good old yellow pages?

Get several quotes and ask for references and maybe see examples of their work?
