Sending money insured in the UK?

Besides Paypal what options do I have as to sending money in the UK. £300 roughly that is insured against fraud?
I've been in a long debate with a person who is selling something on Gumtree.
Wanted bank transfer, but it's not protected for me and too much risk. I got them to agree to use Paypal but they have since had problems.
I'm still wary this could be a scam but that's my choice and not really up for debate here.
They are going to send me dated pictures a bit like a kidnap victim.
Can I send money through the Post Office? And if I can is it protected?
This might not be the right section of the forum, if so can a mod please move it. I couldn't see a section specific to my question.

If they won't take paypal I would walk away. There's no other way that I'm aware of that offers buyer / seller protection.
You could use a inpartial 3rd party as a go between (escrow) but I've never looked into this so don't know what services are available.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Well there account is limited and admittedly they have been honest between what they've told Paypal and what they have emailed me.
The 'kidnap' style picture arrived so at least the goods are legit.0 -
Gumtree + wants money in advance = scam.
Walk away.
Gumtree is a face to face venue, if you cannot collect and inspect the goods in detail before paying I would not even consider it for one moment.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Agree.
Ask yourself one question:
"If the sale is genuine, why is the seller trying to avoid fixing his PayPal account and instead demanding an alternate mayment method?"Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

You can send money through the Post Office, yes. In several different ways.
But there's no protection against fraud.0
