Young Driver insurance - marmalade

Hi

My daughter is off to university in September and it is near enough to commute there instead of living in. However we have had a big shock at the price of insurance looking over £3000 for a group 1 car, three times more than what the car would be worth lol. She is learning to drive at the moment and looking to go in for her test in the next month or so.

Anyway I have come across a site marmalade... which allows you to purchase a new car/3 year old and get discount insurance has anyone used these? Also she won't be driving late at night which I know can make a difference with some insurers.

Really I am asking if anyone knows where we can get cheap insurance, I know it might be mission impossible!!

Many thanks inadvance

Forgett about comparing the premium to the value of the car. It isn't particularly relevant. It is about the damage they can do to other people and their property, as well as the fact most insurers just are not interested in writing young drivers.

Marmalade are fine if the deal works for you but remember you are tied into something there and look at the overall costs involved.

Better to find an older low group car - fiesta, skoda fabia/felicia, maybe a polo, Nissan Micra, Yaris etc and shop arround.

You can also try Coverbox, Ikube, Insure the Box. The problem might be if she is going to be driving there and back a lot the mileage will soon add up and might make those providers less economic.

Is she sure she want's to live at home while at uni? A big part of the experience is getting away from home and out on your own for the first time, in a relativly safe enviornment.
  • Try APlan, Only Young Drivers, Adrian Flux. Calling them is best
  • Hi - agree with dogbot.

Would also add that you won't save money on insurance by getting a really cheap old banger - insurance companies would worry about the state of the car and the lack of safety features and you might end up paying more in total than if you bought something a bit newer. Test a few insurance quotes for different small cars before making a decision.
