Card payment reserve fees

Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
When I make a card (visa debit, I'm with Nationwide) transaction on a Thursday night at the supermarket say for £43.21, when I go into my account that night or the next day the total has been taken from the available balance. Fair enough, but the amount taken is £44.21! The day after that, the transaction usually shows the transaction at it's correct amount so all is well
but....
it's annoying if that night (when I'm at the supermarket) I have calculated I have £10 left in my account to withdraw as cash but because the reserve total is £1 more than the actual transaction, my available balance is only £9 so I can't get any cash! I live rurally so my nearest cash machine is 13 miles away so it's not easy to just nip back the next day to get it.
Why does this happen & it doesn't seem fair that I can't get access to my money when I want it.
Any thoughts?
