Token (£1) payments to creditors - Girobank slips?????

Hiya,

I have written to all my creditors (7 of them) that I am unable to be making any paymenets as not working since 1st December, offered token payments of £1 per month.

3 of them have accepted the offer and sent me giros to use for payments.

Today I have found out that I would have to pay £2.60 fee per each £1.00 payment if I make those at the Post Office

I do not have a cheque book so this is not an option, I need to make counter payments sopmewhere.

Can someone please tell me (if you know) where can I make payments using slips on which it says Girobank?

Thanks a lot....

  • I know when I had these I couldn't find anywhere that didn't charge a fee to cash them. Maybe someone else can advise you otherwise though?

If you ask them for their account details, you should be able to set up a standing order from your account, which won't cost you anything.

  • Soph - thanks for that - I am on the phone to Santander now as Google "told me" Girobak payement slips belong to Alliance and leicester which was taken over by Santander - will see what they say.....

What a nonsense to pay £260 fee per each £1.00 payment :(

And PO cost £1.50 for a £1.00 Postal Order - plus a stamp and an envelope.... :(
  • Yup - for anyone that may need this info in the future - the Girobank Payments Sluips can be used to make payments free of charge at Alliance & Leicester old branches and Santander...........Was just told that by Santander Customer Service....

    Uffffffff
  • .. and it turned out NOT to be the case.

Could not pay those in Allane&leicester Branch or Abbey (Santander) branch.

Does anyone know where those can be paid without a massive fee?

Get your creditors to give you their account number and sort code. Then set up recurring online payments on your internet banking (or through 'phone banking if you use it). Free of charge and you can then change the payments up or down depending on circumstances.

  • The Mull - no, I do not have a chequwe book, would not be asking the question if I did.

Jinx - do not really want to talk to them, keep all to letters (do not want them to have my number and harass me by phone) but yes, that is an idea.....

Thanks, was stressed and did not think of the obvious....

Fair enough, write and ask them. I did this with Moorcroft cos they sent me a book of girocheques - wrote to them 3 times before they provided the info to allow me to start paying them. Just kept saying, 'I WANT to pay you, but need your details, please send to me....'.

I dont know if you know this - but during my DMP I found out that if you pay your original creditor they forward the money to the DCA that theyve transferred/sold the debt too. At least for a while, i guess its while they get the arrangements all set up. HTH

  • Jinx has it spot on.
Have a look on the slips and see if there is a sort code and account number or maybe on the back of any letters from them, I pay Moorcroft this way online, using there ref number so they match it to me. At first they were difficult and said "we need you to set up a direct debit or give us a debit card details to bill monthly", no chance.

Its just occurred to me that the OPs creditors are probably some of those that the rest of us have.

Grumpyoldwoman if you dont mind saying who your creditors are we wannabes can probably give you the account numbers/sort codes....
