well after posting saying how helpful the lady was I spoke to with opening my account..I have today received a letter from them informing me in order to complete their security checks..I need to go to one of their branches and get my paper work confirmed..impossible for me as nearest branch is 12 miles away and car parks nearest charge £10 for 2 hours parking..yep thats right! its to encourage people to use park and ride..which I cant do do walking with a stick and having a buggy with a small baby in it.
So phoned and spoke to completely disinterested bloke who said the only way that I could get the paper work back to them by post was to have it certified like a passport..my gp wanted £25 for the pleasure so reluctantly Ive cancelled my cash minder application. This means that when I go BR..my DD's are going to get bounced back when my account is frozen until I can open another..fab..I guess what I will have to on the day of my court hearing, cancel the DD's contact the companies and just say Ive opened a different account and ask for new paperwork..but I think I will be going to Barclays post BR instead

hmm it's a downfall of the coop...my nearest branch is about 20 miles away too. is the train any cheaper than car park?
good luck with opening a barclays account x0 -
sadly no train..I live in quite a rural area...and nearest rrain station is THAT town..he! he!..its a bind but ho hum..I think the only other way round it is to have my benefits paid into a post office account but of course they will freeze that too as soon as I go BR..sigh
the other thing thats worth pointing out though is that Co op did say that the account would still be frozen for a short time when I was declared BR0 -

what about barclays???
yep. have decided to go for Barclays as soon I am declared BR..as advice seems to be that they WILL close down any account you open prior to bankruptcy..my main worry is making sure I dont lose tax credits/child benefit and a large loan payment is due out of my bank account next week and if there is money there..I will lose it to the loan (and I need to hold onto it for bankruptcy fees)0 -
Well I opened my Barclays account (obviously make sure its the basic account) a few weeks before I went BR. I told them when I was opening the account that I was going BR and they were absolutely fine and I got the account details there and then. As its a basic account and they advertise it suitable for BR (and barclays like Coop are BR friendly) they shouldn't close it and just tell the OR and make a note on your BR forms that the Barclays account is for use after going BR.kaleidoscope wrote: »yep. have decided to go for Barclays as soon I am declared BR..as advice seems to be that they WILL close down any account you open prior to bankruptcy..my main worry is making sure I dont lose tax credits/child benefit and a large loan payment is due out of my bank account next week and if there is money there..I will lose it to the loan (and I need to hold onto it for bankruptcy fees)0 -

Well I could try it I guess:j..would certainly be a lot easier to open a barclays account..do I just go into branch and ask for their basic account0 -
Yeah, just go in and tell them you want a basic Barclays Cash Card account. Normally you'll see one of the advisors and they'll take all your details and open the account. When your speaking to the advisor, be clear that you want just a basic cash card account with no o/d facilities, etc and I actually made a point of say I was opening the account to use as I was planning on going BR in a few weeks.
Make sure you have some ID on you and proof of address (I think I had my bank statements from my then current bank account). As I said, I had no problems and left the branch with my new account number/sort code. I think I got my card and pin within 7-10 days and I also got the phone/online banking access, but once I was declared BR and the OR informed Barclays, they did remove my access to online banking and the automated phone banking (you can still ring them, just can't used the automated phone banking).0 -
Hi there,
Yes you just ask for a basic Barclays account and tell them about your bankruptcy- so they don't offer you a normal current account. Try to take out as much cash as possible from all your accounts before you go bankrupt. THen you have cash to hand if and when your bank accounts are frozen. I timed my bankruptcy for just after my tax credits etc had been paid into my account. Then I took out the cash myself so it wasn't sitting in a bank account.0
