Cheque in joint name

I've just added my partner to the mortgage and borrowed a little bit more to pay off debts but we've received the cheque today and it's made payable to us both. As we don't have a joint account (as yet) can I pay this into my account or does it need to paid it into a joint account? I need to pay these debts off asap!!!

Needs to be paid into a joint account. If that's not something you intended to do - then have a word with the BS and see if they'll cancel the cheque and fund your account direct - if you explain matters to them. As you've just added your OH to the Mtge - the evidence will be clear to them.
But I do suspect they'll now decline to advance the funds to a singular account. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Thank you. We're both off work on Monday so now we need to find a good bank to open an account with
