JSA and Part time job.

Hi Everyone,

I have just been offered a part time job of just 2 hours a day Mon-Friday and as I will still be able to claim jsa along with my husband I may be £5 or £10 better off a week, although that will go on petrol. I would not be getting much at out of this job at all.

When I asked a question about this on the Bankruptcy forum someone said they question whether its worth bothering taking the job.

Does anyone know If I change my mind and turn the job down would I be penalised by the jsa.
My husband and me are both on jsa.

Also would anyone know how this job may effect our housing benefit?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

  • Somebody help please.:)
  • are you both signing on or does he sign on and you are on his claim?
If you also sign on, did you find the job or did the jobcentre find it?
if the answer to question 1 is no, he claims for you, then there is no penalty
If you found the job yourself, and have not yet started, then they cannot penalise you
If you sign on, and have started work already, the jobcentre should ask why you left and refer to a decision maker to look at whether you had 'goodcause' for leaving (though they never seem to rmember to do this with part time work!)

Thanks very much for your reply cassieB57.
The jobcentre gave me the job to apply to about 3wks ago and I told them about the interview last week and wrote about it in my signing in book the week before, I sign on every week.

My husband and me have our own signing in books but we have what they call a joint Claim. Actually I think he may be on my claim as his claim ended on january, it was contributions.

I am supposed to start at this job on the 24th and my next sign on day is on the 22nd.

Life would have been slightly easier for me if the retirement date for women had not been suddenly changed, as I am 59 nearly 60.

Thanks again and I hope this all makes sense :)
  • If the jobcentre notified you of the vacancy, and you then refuse to accept it they COULD refer to a decision maker to decide if you had 'good cause' for failing to accept the job-but you do say the job is only 10 hours a week, and I think in that case because the job is less than 24 hours a week, you would automaticlly have good cause
  • Thanks cassieB57 you've been a great help.

All I need now is to pluck up the courage to turn down the job and chance what happens to me. That's if my husband agrees with my decision that is.

Do you think if I don't mention the job interview on my next sign in until they do, would be a good or bad idea?

I wish I had been an idiot at the interview now, or perhaps I was an idiot but they gave me the job because they were desperate. The first words he said were a lot of people hadn't turned up, so???:)

Is there any chance of further hours?
I can understand why a lot of people didn't turn if they are only offering 2 hours per day.
    *SIGH*
    :D
  • Thanks DX2, the vacancy was for Full/Part time but he just mentioned to me that the hours were 5.30 am to 7.30 am from Monday to Friday.

Perhaps if I do try to turn down the job he will mention some other hours, when I applied for the job I was hoping for the full time vacancy.

Perhaps I should have asked him at the time, but I was a bit nervous and didn't want to say the wrong thing.

When I looked at the vacancy details again the hours were between 5.30am to 11.30 pm so I do hate to think what the hours for full time were.

Also the wage he mentioned was less than in the advertisement but then I do not have any experience of the job.

I know its a pain now.:(:)
  • If the wages were less than advertised that's good cause. I wouldn't bother saying anything but if the adviser is doing their job they should ask you. In which case you have a good reason for turning the job down.
  • Thanks for that idea cassieB57 and should I say about the very few hours that I was offered do you think?

Most of the time the adviser just reads what I've written in my sign in book and types it into the computer, but this time they will ask most likely, just because.:)
  • I checked with one of the advisers at work and he agreed with me; they cannot sanction you for refusing a job less than 16 hours
