The ESTA gets you into the country. Once you are there just just need valid photo ID for an internal flight.

Wow, sprint air is giving me some fantastic prices and quite tempted to join up with their $9 fare club as I do plan to retun to the USA in December again doing multi stops

Ok folks, thanks for all you help and advice and have decided to fly LON-NY then do an internal seperate (just need to tweak my dates to get the best fare for the internal leg which works out very a very good price even with 1 suitcase)

However BA and Virgin cost the same, and from my little research people have said for economy BA is better, but not sure about them though since all the strike business, but for a long haul with kids and one being a toddler who loves to fly (he asks me everyday when we are going on the plane like we can just hop on and off like a bus ) I really need comfort, good entertainment and good legroom

To be honest, there isn't that much difference between BA and Virgin in economy. And I'm not sure I'd be expecting "comfort, good entertainment and good legroom" - usually it's a matter of grinning and bearing it for 7 hours.

I take it you have never been on a long haul Thomas cook flight then? 9 hours to the Dom republic on what I can only describe as a tin can, it really cant get any worse. I am not expecting Emirates or Qatar airlines standard, but anything must be better that TCX

Some virgin aircraft A340 have 2-4-2 seating which may be better if there are just 2 of you.

Nope, me and the kids, I would prefer to go with BA as I have been on BA (shorthaul) and found it very comfy, my sister went with virgin to orlando and she was not impressed, but you never know when BA will start thier strikes again which really worries me

The planes and seats are different, the long haul planes don't have the leather seats in economy, they're cloth.
