New Belkin Router - VPN Kicking me out every 3 mins

Just before I take this back to PC World and throw it at them I thought i would check in case anyone had any bright ideas.

I have a new Belkin Play router, which works fine, works with my company's VPN just fine and was all going well till my wife worked from home with her company laptop. The VPN will connect for her but kicks her back out every 2/3 minutes and she has to reconnect, I am now very unpopular!

She spent 3 hours on the phone to her IT support people who were naff all use and said I must have a fixed IP and the DHCP server on the router must be faulty (it isn't and I have a static IP through my ISP but it still works fine for her through the old Linksys).

So I've tried all I can think of, turning off Qos, putting her laptop in the DMZ, turning off the Router firewall altogether.

The laptop is getting an IP from the Router fine(192.168.2.8) but if I take her MAC and add it to the list of fixed IP to assign in the Router settings and give that a different number (192.168.2.20) it still takes 192.168.2.8.

Does anyone have any ideas, I cant do much with her laptop as it is well locked down but the VPN Software will let me see the IP is assigned fine and I can see the IP address from the Router there. This is all wired BTW I've tried wireless but it made no difference.

Failing which any recommendations for a Router that will run 2.4 and 5Ghz simultaneously (damn you Ipod Touch). Looked at the Linksys 3000e but it has not had great write ups. Her employers recommend Linksys though so may have to go that way to be sure (assuming I can persuade PC World to take it back).

try reducing the mtu setting on the router.

make sure no idle timeouts are set.

check for firmware upgrades, or google the vpn client and the router.

Beat me to it. Try 1492, 1472 and 1458.
  • Stab in the dark but try disabling the Routing and Remote Access service and clear the ARP cache on your wife's laptop.

  • Hi - has your wife's VPN ever worked from your home? Can she try it from someone else's home? I would use simple deduction for this. It's either the router or your wife's laptop (or a weird combination of the two). It's unlikely to be the company VPN setup as everyone would be moaning.

If it works from a friend's house the it's the router. If it doesn't it's the laptop. When you've tried this then you can take the next step.
  • Tried what I could, I have no admin rights on the laptop so a lot of things I couldn't but I changed the MTU at the Router end to different settings with no luck. The old Linksys Router still works fine which does suggest an issue with the Belkin. Googling the VPN Client and Belkin brings up nothing of use.

Much as I hate to admit defeat it's going back because I've now spent a whole morning (when I should be working) on this and got nowhere.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll let you know if a new router works fine.

Probably a setting somewhere, I'd check the Linksys admin pages and check to see if theres anything different or unusual there.

Also, a little harsh to throw it at the PcWorld Employees.
  • Sorted, despite having button in the Router settings page saying check firmware and the Router telling me it is up to date, the website has a newer version, top of the list of fixes

    PPTP VPN Connection issue

Probably should have checked this earlier, but i believed the Router when it said it was up to date.

Anyway for anyone in the future who may have the same problem and is googling for it.

Client - Fiberlink Mobile Office Business
    Router - Belkin Play
    VPN Connection problem.

Solution - Firmware update to Firmware 1.00.15 (Dec 14 2010).

    Thanks all for your help.

(And I have nothing against PC World just a turn of phrase ;) )
