car insurance for 24 year old male, 1st car, any tips?
Hi guys,
im going to be buying my first car from my local manheim auction house in bristol next week, but im hoping to keep insurance to a minimum too. I have got a few quotes around the 800-1000 mark...
i heard from a guy who was 25, a teacher and he was having quotes for 2000.....
any tips for keeping insurance down especially as im not sure which car ill be getting yet, could be anything like focus, astra, fiesta, golf, polo, punto, yaris, a3, civic....hopefully engine size 1.4.-1.7 range....or smaller if manheim have em'..
any help much appreciated.....!

I would be cautious buying at auction, as you will need to get a quote before bidding, insurance is so "fickle" what you and I consider to be very similar cars could have completely different premiums.
Not sure what quotes you have got but if you are looking at cars like A3 with 1.6 engine, I would imagine that could be quite pricey.I am a mortgage adviser. You should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Hi guys,

What mechanical experience do you have? Are you a mechanic or know someone who is who you are taking along with you?
Have you ever been to an auction before?
If the answers are none, no and no then you're leaving yourself wide open to a trousering. If a car goes for next to nothing, its usually because the trade buying there know its a lemon. And lots of people going to auctions pay more than forecourt prices because they get excited and also forget about the buyers premiums and indemnity insurance which is on top of the hammer price.0 -

Good advice, to be honest the OP would probably be better off buying privately from the small adds in the local rag.0 -
cheap insurance? bus pass. Or one of the cars the flinstones had where you had to run with your legs through the floor?
only joking, i'd say avoid anything "cool..." like a focus, astra, fiesta, golf, polo, punto, yaris, a3, civic
although you might be ok on yaris and maybe polo...0 -

Nowt wrong with Punto's. I've had 2; Cabrio and HGT, although I wouldn't recommend the latter for insurance purposes. I had a Yaris on a weekend hire a few months ago... hated it. Dint like the position of the instruments and dials which were slap bang in the middle of the dash. I would steer well clear of VX's as well unless you are talking brand new.

bought my first car at 22, a 0.9l Fiesta, 13 years old at the time. This was in 2002, and insurance was a bit under £500.
Smaller engine ftw. You can always upgrade in a couple of years time. The older the car, the easier to learn self maintenance!
(Was glad to have my dad around as an experienced car bodger, we stripped and cleaned the engine together!)
Add, ooh 100%, for the increase in 8 years.
Go for common brands ford/citroen/peugeot/vauxhall for cheaper cars.0
