Hi all I am new to this forum but wanted some advice.
My boyfriend and I have been together 5 year and are desperate to move out of our parents home and live together. However we can only afford to rent a small 1 bed flat over 25 miles away from where I work.
Just wondered if anyone else had any ideas of ways we could move out.
Our salarys combined come to 1600 a month.
We have around 500 left for rent
We are on the housing register, but have been told it might never happen.
We have been rejected on the grounds of income for homebuy, (homebuy direct, shared ownership and discounted rent)
We cannot buy as the house prices are so high.
We are not eligable for housing benefit.
Thanks in advance
We live Nr Brighton in Sussex.

What on earth do you spend £1100 on, every single month, while at home with the parents?
Get hold of an SOA (statement of affairs - google for one) and post it so forum experts can recommend economies.
Rejected as too low income? It shouldn't be too high, think the limit is £60k. You'd need to demonstrate deposit and fees saved, though.
You double your renting options, if you can get to £600 a month for renting.
135 1-bed flats within 10 miles of Brighton on Rightmove for £600...50 odd at £500...how picky are you being !?
How much deposit have you saved? If close to £0, save harder is the only option.Act in haste, repent at leisure.

Rent 500
Food 200 - Ok, but you could get this lower
Car HP 169- do you really really need this?
Car insurance 65 (I am 21)
Petrol 120
Car tax?
Car maintenance?
Insurance 6
Electric and water 105 - massively high. You should get this for £50-70, lower if you try
Internet 10
Council tax 100
Contract phones x 2 70 - you need to downgrade your packages and then go PAYG
TV licence?
Clothes? Put and exact amount.
Going out £50
Other (clothes/going out/emergencies etc) 200 - what else is in here?
= 1545 Our actual income is 1560
Other travel to work?
Holidays?
Presents?If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Thanks for you replys.
With regard to the contract phones, I am not sure if we can reduce the contract, we got them out last August on a 2 year contract, if we lived together I know we wouldn't need a contract that expensive but as we are already tied in not sure what to do about it?
I could reduce the Hire purchase if I got a cheaper car, I was thinking about getting rid of the car to save a lot but dont know if I could live without it...
As you say I havent included car maintenance etc, so its going to make it even more unaffordable!
Think we will have to forget holidays!
Thanks0 -
We are married and haven't had a holiday since our honeymoon, a week in the lakes. It's a luxury, not a necessity. Same for going out; stay in with a special meal, or visit relatives. ASDA PAYG is dirt cheap, and my clothes are Primark. If you want it enough you will find a way. If not...
We are not rich, but we are together, solvent, and happy.
Living round there you need to be raising your income long term. Any vocational courses? Part time work?Been away for a while.0 -

I'd love to live even 50 miles away from work - I'm hours away each day - try to work from home more or look for a job nearer where you can liveThe proof that some people really are opinionated and ignorant

I think you both need to think very seriously about when and where you live. You are on very low salaries, any chance of that improving, particularly as you get older and the minimum age increases?
I also think you need to understand the legal situation when you move into together; at the point when you sign a legal contract to rent you and your OH both become fully liable for the whole amount owed. This means if you sign a one year contract for £500 rent, then you personally become responsible for paying the whole £6000 if at any point your relationship fails or one of you loses their job. Ditto CT.
So, you need to find out when you can get rid of that expensive car; save up enough to pay the EA costs of renting a place and I suggest as a starting point you both save £1500 to cover the first six months' rent. Then you might get a landlord to look at you.
Then workIf you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
