Moved house - wait till Council Tax letter comes through?

I’ve just moved into a new house and have all bills and utilities sorted now except council tax. Should I just wait until I get sent a ‘to the new occupier’ letter and follow instructions, or am I breaking the law not going out my way to chase it up?

If it’s not backdated to the specific date I moved in, I see no harm in waiting to get the letter through, getting a few weeks/however long it takes to turn up for free effectively. But if it would be backdated, I suppose I may as well get cracking with it now!

Anyone have any experience on this?

Just to note, I'm not trying to get out of paying Council Tax full stop. Simply trying to push on the beginning of payments as long as possible!

believe me they will backdate it.. i did this but only to try and spread cost of bills over 2 months from moving in.. i would write or call them and let them send you the bill.. .. and get your name on the list for next year as these are being sorted now..

Your council tax liability will begin on the day you moved in and you will be billed from this date - at this time of year though you will only get one instalment (the statutory instalment scheme ) unless the council allow you more at their discretion.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
