Live Mail to delete new @Live addresses?
In the Hotmail and Live Mail support blog today, it was hinted that the @Live accounts created with the javascript hack posted here on LiveSide (no longer working), on the Mail Support blog itself (in a comment) and on Mess.be and elsewhere may not survive long:
Because I don't want to get into the business of censoring comments, I did not delete the instructions for creating an @live.com account. @live.com accounts are not legitimately available anywhere except in the Netherlands, where we released Windows Live Mail (without the Beta) last week. If you created an @live.com account using the instructions below, it's quite likely the account will get blown away.
While it remains to be seen whether any action is taken against these newly created accounts (and for the record no action has been taken - so far - on accounts created from an earlier leak of a workaround to the @live address creation process), it's beyond us here at LiveSide why any such action would occur.
Windows Live fans (and at this point there are far too few of them), the ones who follow sites like LiveSide, should be rewarded for their enthusiasm, not punished. If anything, Windows Live and Live Mail might want to review their security procedures, and take their lumps for what was at best a sloppy release. If the addresses are revoked, it might well turn out to be a public relations nightmare, and anger Windows Live's biggest fans. Classic case of two wrongs not making a right, if it were to happen.

Update November 14th
Because I don't want to get into the business of censoring comments, I did not delete the instructions for creating an @live.com account. @live.com accounts are not legitimately available anywhere except in the Netherlands, where we released Windows Live Mail (without the Beta) last week. If you created an @live.com account using the instructions below, it's quite likely the account will get blown away.
I don't have a current ETA on when @live.com accounts will be available in the rest of the world. As soon as I do know how to sign up for them, I'll post the instructions on this site.
Opting Out Of Windows Live Mail Beta
If you want to opt out of Windows Live Mail, there's an article on this site on how to do so. Simply: Sign into Windows Live Mail, click Options and select Beta Opt Out. If you do not see an "Options" in the upper-right-hand corner of any page, it means you are using the downlevel or light version of Windows Live Mail. You'll need to use the full version of Windows Live Mail in order to opt out.
M8 Issues
We had two issues come up with the M8 release: "working on your request" messages appearing and an inability to send file attachments larger than 1 Mb. Both of those issues were resolved. If you're still experiencing either of these, please post a comment - or, to ensure that you get a response, go to http://support.live.com and select Windows Live Mail. Complete the eform and a support specialist will respond back within 24-hours.
If you are getting persistent "working on your request" errors, and you know how to use Fiddler, run Fiddler and reproduce the error. Zip up the Fiddler log and send it to emailspt@microsoft.com.
Junk Mail?
I'm seeing very few complaints/comments about the number of junk mail messages you're all receiving, so I take that to mean that our anti-spam services are working properly. That's great news.
And another onehttp://www.mess.be/
Will Microsoft take back our hacked @live.* addresses?
dwergs says:
The official Windows Live Mail Space has commented on the @live.com/co.uk/.be/etc. accounts created using the registration form hack our own Timothy discovered last Thursday. They write that "if you created an @live.com account using the instructions below, it's quite likely the account will get blown away."
I'm convinced that it would be a stupid choice to close down the tens of thousands of accounts that were created due to a security hole on their sign-up page. Ok, every single person who used our simple technique was very aware that he (or she) was "messing with" Microsoft, but would they really want to punish their biggest Live fans for the company's own mistake? And then there are people who don't give a damn about owning a @live.com address unless it looked really good (like mess@live.com, which I wasn't able to score by the way). I don't think they'll settle for less afterwards, knowing that they once owned a much cooler address. To be continued...
UPDATE: @live.nl address owners need not to fear, as David and xkalionx reminded me. Holland's big daddy Microsoft's favorite and got the Windows Live Mail launch exclusive.0 -
I got some real cool usernames for @live.com, I'd really like to keep them.

It will be horrible if Microsoft deletes all of the accounts created in the javascipt loophole. But what about the ones earlier in the year. Delete them too, it is only fair.
But if people are going look at my example@live.com, etc more and more people will go to @live.com, etc and not gmail and yahoo.0 -
Just a quick update - dont know if this is true yet or comfirmed by another site but over at liveside.net, http://www.liveside.net/blogs/main/archive/2006/11/15/live-mail-to-delete-new-live-addresses.aspx a person has posted/commentHi all-
We just wanted to update LiveSide's readers – We will NOT be revoking @live.com email addresses recently obtained by many of you. We love all the enthusiasm for Windows Live, and certainly don’t want to stamp down on it in any way. We will however keep an eye out to make sure that accounts are not abused (for instance, if obtained by obvious spammers).
I'll watch this comment thread in case you have any questions!

Update, November 16th, 2006
<SNIP>
An update: A decision has been made to leave the @live.com accounts in place - so long as the account was created for personal use and so long as it was your enthusiasm for getting an @live.com account that motivated you to use the posted code to get an account. There are probably a few (rare, I hope) cases where someone truly attempted to exploit the security hole to create a high volume of accounts for spam or phishing purposes and I'm sure we'll track those down. Otherwise, if you created the account with good intentions, it's safe.
I don't have a current ETA on when @live.com accounts will be available in the rest of the world. As soon as I do know how to sign up for them, I'll post the instructions on this site.
From the horse's mouth - hopefully we're in the clear now.
HTHMSE: It's grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat! :beer:0
