Another way to save money when supermarket shopping!

  • I have been doing this for a long time - I've got so good at it that just lately I have to add up the items to make sure I get the minimum amount for a voucher, if I am a couple of pounds off I just pick up something I would normally get anyway. I have gone down from a weekly shop to a fortnightly shop too.

It's not just in supermarkets either, I pick up something in a shop and put it in my basket, then I walk around for 5 minutes and if I still want it by then then I buy it, if not it goes back. Must have saved myself a fortune!!

I tend to shop a day later each week . So if say I go on a Monday one week then it would be Tuesday the next and so on .

I can always find something to make a meal and it means I save the cost of a full shopping bill every 8 weeks :j

    Excellent idea :T

  • 3 weeks ago I e-mailed tesco asking them why they were charging £1.95 for 12x oxo cubes which were only 95p at asda and sainsbury they ignored me
I see they do a price compare button at the bottom of the screen when you shop on line where they compare themselves to waitrose
I would never shop at waitrose far too expensive, as is tesco!
  • I haven't been able to get on with MySupermarket. It seems to take forever as too many items, esp value/smartprice don't have exact equivalents. I can't remember specifics but to start with Te$co, switch to compare at A$da, switch back... I just don't have hours to spare doing this. I live over 8 miles from Mr T, 9 from Mr M (who are not even on MySupermarket), and my other options of Mr A, Mr S, L!dl and Ald! are much further away. And of course there are no whoopsies when shopping online, not that I've had any success at all in Mr T's this year so far, I have to shop at the weekend and can't work out their timing for reductions (store open 24 hours Mon-Sat, closes 4pm Sun). Mr M is a more reliable one for reduced items in the last hour before they close, though our nearest is small and has a far smaller range than Te$co.

I keep meaning to try Approved F00d, get their email offers, but when I've tried in the past they were out of proper food items and only have rubbish like pot noodles, sweets and other junk left.

I've been tending to do M0rrisons for most of it, then as I drive home past Te$co I can pop in for the bits that are always cheaper there - giant bags of pasta and rice, Value DW tabs, OB white vinegar, plus any good special offers. Maybe when Mr M finally offer online shopping they'll be added to MySupermarket and by then perhaps they'll have made the whole process, which is a really good idea, a lot faster to navigate.
  • when i go shopping with the wife, we always have a daft bet on the cost of the shopping, keeps you damm good at mental arithmatic when the loser has to polish the cat, or wash up bare assed :)

Best way I found to save money at the Supermarket was to only bring in cash what I was happy to spend. I worked out what I could afford per day and just spent what I had and only what I had. I often had to put things back when I got as far as the till when I realised I hadn't got enough but eventually it settled and I wouldn't overspend.

I'd suggest doing this every shop for the next 10-15 shops and then you sort of settle into a pattern. Repeat every so often to make sure your keeping on track.

Something that I always do is make sure I have the smallest trolley, or a basket if needing between say 4-10 things, less than 4 I carry in my hand. That way you can't overload it too much.
Some trolleys now look to be the size of a skip, useful for a family of 4 who shop monthly but ridiculous for most weekly shops.
I second the making stuff yourself, tastes so much nicer than shop bought & loads cheaper.
I do this! If I can't carry it, I've bought too much.

Isn't it funny all the things we do to try to get some of the psychology working our way instead of being played by the supermarkets?
I find I am operating to an increasingly prescriptive set of rules, the top one of which is that I only ever buy meat that is less than half price, except for frozen mince and weight watchers sausages. As I live near a co-op which often has not only great reductions but also multi buy offers that still come off, this saves me loads of cash. I freeze the meat and find I often am having to walk past great reductions as I have to use up what is in the freezer.
I've also decided that I'll only buy reduced fruit juice ( in co-op again) or when it is available on approved food.
As time in life is limited, I don't think it is possible to always get a good price on everything, but these are easy wins if you live near the right shops.

This is a peril with approved food but as you only really need to make an order once a month, it really is worth making the effort to look every few days. HOWEVER if you just look at the new lines section under special offers, you will see what is new and often sells out quickly. Or if you are just looking to save big money on fruit juice and drinks, scan that section.

  • This is a good tip. I just put the junk stuff back at the last minute, without even thinking, that can work. Sometimes I compromise I allow myself one treat per shop, so 1 choc bar/sweets or crisps instead of both.
