So frustrating - laptop trackpad+keyboard suddenly stops responding!

I recently reinstalled my Acer laptop with windows xp sp2 (just windows, not the restore cd). During the windows xp setup (where you have to choose keyboard setup etc) the trackpad and keyboard work perfectly fine.

But then, as soon as it boots into windows both the keyboard and mouse simply stop responding.

I've tried reinstalling windows with the restore CD, with the single windows xp cd, tried resetting the bios by removing the bios 'coin', but to no avail.

Is this something that is repairable?

If the trackpad and keyboard still work fine with the windows installation CD, then it's not a hardware fault and is more likely a driver issue. Are you sure the restore CD actually did a restore back to as shipped? Presumably to run that, your keyboard at least had to be operating.
Can you boot whatever OS is in there now into safe mode and the keyboard continues to work? If so that would be another pointer to a driver problem.

Thanks for the swift reply. Just booted into safe mode, and surprisingly the keyboard and trackpad seem to be working.....

I checked the device manager and several don't have drivers installed. I will try to install as many as I could using the recover CD in safe mode, but some drivers "require windows installer" which can't be accessed through safe mode apparently.

Will give it a try and report back. Thank you sincerely for your help.

    Gonna restart.

Have you downloaded the drivers from Acers site for your computer model ?

Also you need to put Windows Service pack 3 on it .

connected to the mains, boot normally, if the trackpad doesn't work, remove battery, and see if it works.
