NCP - Credit Card Surcharge?

I parked in an NCP car park at the weekend in London, and when I came to pay the £22.50 for 24 hours the machine wouldn't accept my credit card. I ended up using my debit card, but it then charged me the 2.5% surcharge for using a credit card.

I have emailed NCP but I have had no response, has this happened to anyone else? It's only 56p, but it's the principal!

  • In all fairness (I never thought those words would leave my lips) to NCP they are charged for the priveledge of you using your credit card, lots of places charge this amount. Sainsburys etc all charge it but it is hidden in all the cost of their goods.

You uttered the words to quickly Peter! It was a debit card! They are not normally charged but I have seen it done! Knowing NCP they probably would!

If it's a Visa Debit card, request a Visa Debit Chargeback form from your bank.

Explain that the machine has overcharged you and that it was a machine that did not ask for a pin number (as is usual for NCP machines I believe).
  • I still get charged a fee to accept the debit card, varies from 30p per transaction.

Did the machine have a mention on it about 2.5% ? The type of surcharge is not uncommon.

There was no mention of the 2.5% charge for anything, I had to look it up on their website, and there it just mentioned credit cards. I didn't need to enter my pin number either... will definitely request the form from my bank though if I can.

    Thanks :)

Go for it. They should send you the form and a disclaimer. They are unlikely to quibble over a couple of quid anyway.

Just tailgate the car in front...free parking. Job done.
