Ideas to eat cheaply whilst in Travelodge and in London.

When we stay in a travelodge we always take some cereal, two bowls and milk, unless of course we are out of London then we hunt for a supermarket breakfast. I do agree food can be very expensive in London but there are lots of places to get a cheap evening meal, such as bistros. For lunch we usually find a Boots and buy some sanies or rolls. I hate adding to the expense by paying out a fortune for food so good for you in getting prepared. Have a nice weekend and please do leave the slow cooker at home0

Hi all, thanks for all the responses and suggestions, we're staying in Waterloo and we're there ffrom friday to monday so a bit longer than usual.
The fish & chip shop next to the Waterloo travelodge (Masters Superfish) is seriously amazing. If you eat in you get a free plate of little prawns to start, plus pickles. Get the mustard-dipped fish - it's fab!
Also nearby is Mamuska Polish cafe in Elephant & Castle shopping centre (10 minutes walk/5 minutes bus) http://mamuska.net/ - they do a daily menu for £5. Southwark's a really good location for great cheap food, I realise this is a bit off-topic for this board so feel free to PM me for more recommendations!2015 comp wins - £370.25
Recent wins: gym class, baby stuff
Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j0 -
bag of chips or crusty bread & cheese, we usually do that if we go out on a weekend. Chuck the healthy diet out the window for a couple of days.Tallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!0

Go to Borough Market on Saturday and try all the free food. Behind Southwark station under the railway line is EV deli which sells Turkish bread (next to the restaurant and the bar of the same small chain). Tas Pide next to the Globe theatre on the southbank also does a cheap set menu but even if you just order a Pide they give you a free bowl of soup to start.0

MaccyD's are cheap and cheerful for breakfast and the OJ is lovely, usually open really early at train stations. We always use it for brekky.
No way I'm paying £12 for breakfast in a hotel. I'd want gold flakes in the marmalade for that.0 -
Remember when I was younger we had a family holiday to london and stayed in a travel lodge type place. We took things like croissants, brioche, bread and jam for breakfast, which we ate in the room, to save money. I did the same thing when I went to a festival last year, £6 for a bacon butty? I don't think so!0

There's a Stockpot in Panton St - between Leicester Square and Haymarket - and the West End Kitchen is opposite http://www.westendkitchen.co.uk/. Both do a 3-course meal for around £8. Not exactly gourmet but very filling! There's also a small chain called Bistro 1 which does more interesting stuff for a similar price. (Cheaper at lunch/afternoon than in the evenings.) http://www.bistro1.co.uk/
Borough Market is very expensive - unless you're lucky enough to be offered a taster! There's a street market in The Cut, Waterloo, which has some decent fruit stalls etc.
Have a great time!0 -
There's a Sainsbury's Local a couple of minutes walk away from Waterloo Travelodge - handy to get a pint of milk for breakfast! (Have just stayed there for three nights and did exactly that). The room we were in was pretty warm even with the heater off - usually we keep our milk by the window but it wasn't really that cool in the room here so you would really need to buy fresh each day.
The Travelodge itself does bar meals and an eat all you like buffet style cooked and continental breakfast - it's £7 something per person but 2 children per adult eat free so might work out to be cost effective as you could really fill up in the morning and might not need lunch.0 -
Try the Edgware Rd for some Arabic food. I am trying to learn the language and our tutor is taking us to one of the restaurants for one of our classes. Apparently, it will cost us about £8.50 each, but we also get lots of extras thrown in (pardon the pun!), including the tea, dessert, salads, fresh bread etc. I love Arabic food anyway, but you will get lots for your moneyA smile costs little but creates much0
