Gift vouchers, do they need to be numbered?

We're planning on selling gift vouchers for a recording session in our new business, does anyone know whether by law they will need to be numbered? They will be printed on heavy weight card so won't be easy to copy.

Does anyone have any experience in this area?

Many thanks in advance :)

I see no reason why they would legally need to be numbered (I've certainly seen unnumbered ones from small independent shops).

However, for business purposes I would say it would be beneficial to number them to monitor how many are in issue and which issued vouchers have been redeemed to stop one being copied and redeemed multiple times.

Don't you believe it. If you can buy the card from a stationers, so can anyone else.

At least if you number them you'll be able to tell if they have been duplicated/given false numbers (but it's up to you I believe)

I recently booked a driving experience for my DD's birthday.

The gift vouchers were standard print but there was a space nect to where it says voucher number, like this

    Voucher number: .......................

and a (I presume) unique number was written on the dotted line. When she phoned to book they took her voucher number and checked it matched her name. There is also a similar line for expiry date (you don't want someone coming back in 5 years time to redeem a voucher !)

Also if you have a break in you'd have some idea of which vouchers were stolen and which were genuine. Hope it never happens to you but we all have to think of these things!

Thank you all, numbering by hand and keeping a record sounds like a good option!

Many printers won't charge much more to number them if anything. :)

You definitely want a unique number on each one, you can also then see if a whole 'batch' reported stolen is being redeeemed etc.

£30 or thereabouts will get you a numbering stamp - you can set it to increment every impression, every second impression, also every 3;4;6and 12 impressions which means you can do the voucher, the counterfoil and an invoice book (or similar) in a batch for yourself.
