I tried the heat gun but it made a right old mess and really fiddly getting round the back. I've got carpet fitters waiting for me to finish so I can't hang about.
  • There isn't any easy method to do it
you either take your time ..or you end up with a rough job

Job should be tackled spindle by spindle..one at a time ..if you try to do it to all of them at the same time you will get frustrated ..and the job will seem to take a lot longer ..

if you set a time limit ..then it will never be done right.
These jobs should be looked at like an Antarctic expedition...very slow gruelling and does your head in ....but the end result is what the goal is ...and will leave you with a real sense of achievement .

  • Don't know the name of it, but you can get a stripper that goes on like a paste, you then wrap in in cling film and leave it.
It lifts all the paint off in one go.

Ive tried that in the past ...was called RonStrip ..

Wasn't that good and cost about £18 to do a square metre of wood with it .

think this is the same stuff BY another name.

    http://www.ackosdiydecorative.com/langlows-peel-away-1---paint-remover--paint-stripper-system-15kg-including-neutraliser-533-p.asp

    £77.99 for 11 square metres

looks good the way the adverts show it ...but what your left with is some gelled paint that soaks even further into the wood underneath of it .

Hope bundance is not reading this ..what with all the chemicals and lead paint .. :)

Strip it with a hot air gun use a hacksaw blade to get in to the nooks and crannies and to sand the spindles use emery cloth cut in to strips to easily sand the spindles, I have done this in the past and once the job is done its well worth the effort as if you stain the spindles then you never have to paint them.
