also, the camp site in Newgale has old paperbacks in the shower block all priced at £1 for charity - great when you have a nice day on the beach and you've forgotten to bring a book!...

Be careful of putting families and larger groups of adults together - their evening requirements will be quite different! One lot will want things to go quiet once they've put the children to bed while the other lot will just be getting started with the alcohol, music, talking and laughing.

The men in our group have always been horrified at the state of the men's toilet and shower blocks in many campsites whereas the women's block have been quite nice. It seems that many men are incapable of using them without also ripping soap dispensers off the wall, toilet seats off the toilet, etc. I don't think your suggested shower cubicles would last long!

but if you are taking up the same amount of space, why should there be a difference in price?

perhaps campsites need to start charging per square footage, rather than per person or unit. or would that discourage singletons and couples who have a tent bigger than their needs?

I guess your right, we'll have to wait and see as we are camping virgins. I bought my husband a Quechua pop-up tent from Decathlon for his birthday last year and we are planning our first trip in June. Maybe we will be one of those couples who pop up the gazebo next time!

  • What a lovely adventure for you - I wish you every success.

Most importantly, do you have a clear idea of the market segment you want to appeal to? This will dictate where you put your energy and money.

Will you be catering for motorhomes? Their needs are a wee bit different - need good access, and levelish parking. Beauty of these campers though is that if you can provide hard-standing, then you could open the site all year thus extending your season.

Hate to see pricing policies that charge extra for this and extra for that - a real turn off.

Not keen myself on a one price offer as generally in 'off-season' many of the amenities in the area are closed or reduced so I think pricing ought to reflect this.

Re the toilet/showers, most important thing is they are quick and easy to clean - the wet room concept is best as you just hose them down. Also agree you do need some separate toilets to speed things up so to speak.

Taking orders for daily bread/milk/eggs/papers always goes down well.

Not sure why everybody is still posting in this thread. Giving good advice to a poster that posted and ran, never to be seen again.

It would be common courtesy to acknowledge some of the posts. I bet they are at UK Campsite forums.

  • Gosh, you got lots of responses! First, good luck with your new business, it sounds great! I'm always a fan of family camping hols - we tend to stay at smaller family friendly sites, but the pre requisite is that they should have a really good shower and toilet block - for me this means clean and well maintained and not too busy. I know what you mean regarding the 'wet room' approach rather than individual toilets and showers and I think this would work well, but you have to think about the fact that people will squirrel themselves away in there for some time, which means less facilities are available to everyone else. Oh, and I like the idea of a tiered pricing system, so people that travel light with less people, cars and kit pay less money :)
