new cannon camera selection help wanted

hi all
been saving for the last 2yrs for anew cannon dslr..
as i have cannon 35mm lenses ..

was looking at the m?40 as this was a good armature camera and not a snappy model also had excellent frame rate 8frames per sec..
this is now obsolete and don't know which to go for,, this will be the last camera i buy so need to get it right!

im looking at the 60d or 7d but cant tell which would suit better,
main interest are shooting ,landscapes and wild life so need a good frame rate
also what extras should i get with it,,ie back up batteries, grip eth

  • Luckily, el reg posted a review on the 60D today!

Tough choice, but this guy has a comparison
    http://dancarrphotography.com/blog/2010/08/27/canon-60d-vs-7d/

It all comes down to cash at the end of the day, if you can stump up the extra £400 or so then by all means get the 7D, slightly older tech, but very reliable.

Although that second article says the 7D still trumps the 60D, but at the end of the day.. it comes down to cash!

It's not just about the money, I have the 60D and I really like it, the 7D is a much bigger camera and in my little hands it didn't feel comfortable, for shooting wildlife the frame rate is better on the 7D but I have seen fantastic shots taken with slower older cameras, the photographer is what counts most here!

Get yourself to a good independent camera shop and have a play with both or even try others they might have to show you. Don't be afraid of buying second hand because lots of people buy these as toys and find that they got a better shot on their phone (because they haven't learned to use it) so they sell it with little use for a lot less than they paid.

    What is your budget?

I can recommend a starter dslr or I can advise on a professional slr but without a figure your question is not answerable.

read my 1st post,,,, budget isent the issue..

except that i cant afford 3.5k for a professional camera and nor would i want one,,it has to be top end amateur /semi pro

no i dont want a starter dslr

so as i said im looking at 60d or 7d just not sure which one to go for,if 7d fits my needs ill save a bit longer and get it later in the year
800- 1200 Stirling,,is available at the min.. if its 1600 ill save till sept and then get it

My neighbour is a wedding photographer and uses a 60D and is very pleased with it. She finds the swivel screen particularly useful.

I have the 7D and love it (upgraded from a 450D). I chose it over the 60D because of the 8fps that enables me to get super shots of wildlife. I had no real need for the swivel screen.

They both have the same resolution of 18Mp, both take HD video, and both also have the same "insides". She and I have taken the same shots with each camera using the same lens with no apparent differences in quality at all. In fact it was impossible to tell which camera had taken which photo without checking on the pc! The 60D is lighter and therefore easier to keep using over a prolonged period, but the 7D has the better frame and is also reasonably weatherproof. The 7D has less "presets" than the 60D, but you can programme in your own.

As far as cards go, the 60D uses SD cards and the 7D Compact Flash. If you want to use the HD video or fast frame facililties, you will need fairly fast CF cards for the camera to record properly.

Your best bet is possibly to go to a photographic club. There should be some members who have the cameras you are considering, and possibly let you have a proper "play" to make up your mind. Failing that, go to a good camera shop and look at and handle both.

Have fun and I hope you get as much enjoyment from your final choice as I have!
  • Hi Try the dpreview site both cameras are listed and there are forums for both.

L series Canon lense are worth considering.

so as i thought 7d for the speed but an all day shoot with a 400mm lense probably means working out for a few weeks before hand,,,
my current camera has 3,6 fms i think and im fed up getting the ducks !!! and not the duck!!!
but i do have arthritis in my hands so a play session sounds like a good idea,
may have to go for comfort over speed,,,
chewbumpkin is their a lot of difference in the weight??

  • Hi Shaun, didn't think about weight as such in my previous post. I have just looked it up on Canon.co.uk and the 60D weighs 755g and the 7D 820g, so not really all that much in it. My 7D weighs more as I use a battery grip which I find helps with balance and the two batteries last for ages with no fear of running out of power whilst out for the day. However, I would consider not using the grip if I was going to be physically carrying it around on foot all day (such as Disneyland) and would pack extra batteries instead. Mind you, the 60D isn't a lightweight either with its batterygrip.

I would suggest a good tryout of both and then decide. I still think that if you can find some people with these cameras and see if you can go out with them, it will certainly give you a much better idea as to which would suit you best compared with a few minutes in a camera shop.

Keep us posted on your decision.
