House Rewire

Hi

After how many years is it before it's recommended you have your house rewired??

In a earlier post I said I'm in the process of buying a property & the wiring seems to be ok at the moment but is about 45yrs old. The wiring is the PVC type but on the lighting circuit there's no earth wire & I don't think there's no earth bonding. The only thing that's been updated on the wiring since the house was new (approx 1965) is they've had a new RCD type consumer unit fitted.

Thanks

    Its a spam bot.

Get a electrician i and get them to do a PAT test.
  • I've had it tested & apparently it's ok but as the wiring is about 45 years old I'm thinking would it be better to have it rewired before we move in as it would be easier than after we've moved in??

True...and you can redecorate at the same time. 45 years is pushing it. Only an electrician can tell you your best option.

Dont see much point in getting a Portable Appliance Test done, think you must have meant a Periodic Inspection where the electrician will test all of the electrical installation and then give a report on their findings with advice on what is required to make the electrical systems safe and the electrician is then in a better position to offer the advice you are asking for.

If you have already have a Periodic Inspection Report, what, if any are the recommendations on there.

see link for more info on the Periodic Inspection

Far easier and quicker to have it rewired whilst empty, full rewire in an empty house including patching up should take no longer than 3 - 4 days.

I wouldnt personally have said its ok as it wouldnt come upto current 17th edition regulations.

  • A house with wiring that old isn't going to have anywhere near enough sockets, so you'd need to put in new power circuits anyway.

No earths on the lighting circuits mean you must not use metal switches or any lights that need earthing, which might be rather limiting.
